Send back the 3870 Extreme for a 9600GT?

I purchased this on Tuesday but the fan is too loud, fan runs at 100% 24/7 its the loudest thing in my case, I can't be bother with trying to get adapters and stuff to reduce the sound and there is no software solution to turn the fan speed down (I'm on Vista 64bit) I would just like a card that's not as loud on idle .....

I spoke to OcUK and they said I can send it back so I was thinking of exchanging it for the 9600GT or something similar around the £125 mark delivered?

Is this a bad move do we think? :confused:

9600GT could be slower I think, and you do know the fan is not supposed to be at 100% Constantly do you?

Well I have heard that they are loud in general but not I didn't?

It does one speed and one speed only?

You think the cards faulty in that case?
 
Sure i read somewhere that card dont have any fan control like a few others about.Just 2 wires on the fan no 3rd for the control of it.8800 GT not in the running then?
 
and i was thinking why my antec 900 sounds strange have two 3870xt extremes but **** the sound as im using headset

They should auto adjust according to temp, someone had an 8800GT that was always at 100%, he then found the wire for fan control was cut resulting in 100% all the time when stock is 30%.
 
Look about the forum i am 90% sure he is not the only one who has had this problem with this model card and fan hence if that is true the card is fine thats just how they come.

Yes thats correct its just a 2 cable/pin connection from the fan..

My card temp is 35c all the time which is cool but the damn fan is getting on my t*ts lol :(

Is there anything of similar power in the price range I could exchange for? If I send this back and get the same model and the fans the same I'll be gutted
 
No, the powercolor card has no fan control. I am using the stock cooler and have a 92mm fan strapped over the stock fan and control it via speedfan.


Or you could always get an aftermarket cooler. Accelero S1 or something

Yeah I suppose but like i said I can't be bothered with adding or changing fans :( knowing my luck I break summit

I may exchange for this instead?

About the same performance and power and a better fan?

What's ppl's thoughts?
 
I would say pay the little extra and get the OcUK 8800GT but think you might have the same problem as some have been reported to have fans at %100 all the time.Pot luck i think as to which one is sent out.If you like the card maybe try get one with the blower cooler that i know %100 has fan control but a lot of people seem to dislike them.

So it maybe a fault then, anyone here got the same card can say its not too loud or at least the fan doesn't do full throttle all the time?
 
As far as i have seen its only happening with video cards with the s1 type cooler the flower looking thing on both the 8800 and the 3870 cards amd mostly the cheaper ones.Dont think its a fault just how they are made.I might be wrong as all i am going from is what i have saw on forums.
 
Just get a cheap fan controller and hook it up to that, just involves unplugging the cable from the board and into the controller, the 9600 wont be as powerfull but I think its a far more low power card
