2008 Australian GP - Race 1/18

Just popped in to give the heads up on the preview show - looks like it already been done :) Thanks again for starting the threads rpstewart.

On a slightly different topic, I was watching the night qualifying for MotoGP in Doha, Qatar last night. Track looks great lit up in the dark. The lights make it possible to see the riders faces through their visors - feels very odd. Plus the artificial lights really bring out the colours of the bikes.
F1 in the night should make for interesting viewing.

Loved being able to see the stabs of flame from the exhausts as well :D

OMG. How utterly dreadful a presenter is Bernie's daughter? She was utterly cringe worthy trying to act normal whilst chatting-up Massa and Raikonnen!

And also: Sony sponsoring ITV's F1 coverage? Didn't know that. Interesting that they're trying to promote their HD range yet the F1 on ITV isn't in HD!

Was in a major electrical retailer yesterday and they were running an HD demo on a load of sets. Featured a Toyota F1 car being driven round Paul Ricard.

Ill be gettign up for both. The plan is to go to bed at 6am after *** qualiying and sleep till the afternoon, then ill be awake for staying up for the race :)

Cant wait for this, eventually something to watch on TV.

I'm running the Bath Half Marathon at 11:30 next Sunday... realllllly shouldn't watch it live. Should be home in time for the 3pm rerun though.

Anyone else tempted to go to Valencia? Looks like a great race to attend.

Looks like the Aussie GP authorities and Bernie have made some sort of a compromise. The start of the race on Sunday has bee put back by 90mins to get a bigger Asia/Europe TV audience. If it works the start will be put back another 90mins next year to try and increase it further.

It was either that or a night race. The night race for the MotoGP opener worked well though so it'll be good to see how F1's night race compares.

Think thats the Panasonic HD trailer/advertising thingy, its been around for quite a while :).

Why is a night race so hard to host? Surely a few lights and generators doesn't cost that much in the grand scheme of things?

I think it's A LOT of lights - it needs to be really bright for the TV cameras. Also all potential crash areas need to be lit, a ~3 mile track is A LOT bigger than a football pitch. Also resilience is critical, multiple backup systems are needed.

Bernie should be getting them to make the GP earlier not later. 90 min earlier is 1:30am our time, perfectly OK for not having to go to bed before hand. There is no way I am getting up at 4:30am it will be recorded and watched after I get up (but before anybody in the house can tell me who won)

Id just like to thank rpstewart for taking on the role of official GP thread creation and with all of the appropriate first post info!

Good job as always rpstewart :D
