Hi guys,

It's a bit embarrassing but I just finished building my new Core 2 Duo system only to watch the temperatures jump to 60 degrees when loading up something as simple as Media Centre.

Looking in the case, the heatsink was cold. When I touched it I noticed it was wobbling- then I noticed that two of the posts were loose

So I need to reapply it properly, but I need to clean the arctic silver off and then put some back on. I can order some articlean to arrive Tuesday, but are there any sensible alternatives that you're likely to find in the average home?

Thanks guys. I found some nail polish remover but it has lots of perfume in it.

I also found some alcohol that was used to clean heads on a tape deck. I'm going to apply some AS5 to a random bit of metal and see if it will do the job.

Cleaned it up with the alcohol used to clean tape heads.

Its idling at about 20degrees rather than 30degrees and it's yet to go over 35. Going to stress test now.

P.S. the Core 2 Duo heatsink plugs are a PITA.

You need some wetness to get rid of all traces not a dry tissue, thats not going to give you a perfect finish to start over with unless you aint fussy.

I use Johnsons Cotton Buds and Bounty Roll to clean all PC parts as it dont make a mess like cheaper stuff (leave powder).

Im sure peeps who spend hours lapping IHS+Heatsinks will clean it throughly to get best out it. ;)

Can I ask how the Mini Ninja mounts to mobo for an AMD AM2 solution? I hate those poxy plastic plug mechanisms and prefer bolt/screw/metal attachments. One reason why I got Noctua coolers for my C2D PCs - Artic Cooling use plastic.... :(

Agreed - ridiculous design.

Give me an A64 clip method any day. Might be a bit more fiddly but at least you pretty much knew when it was on. :)

gt

I totally hated those clips. I felt like I was going to crack the damn IHS on my Opteron fitting the thing on

Might not have a problem, but something like a paper towel will leave a nice bunch of inpurtieis on the chip, not so good for getting good thermal interfacing :P

Isopropyl, clean it off, final clean with a lint free.
