Most of the NForce 680 motherboards are a disaster compared to P35 or X38 in Crossfire. Sell the graphics card and buy an X3870 X2 if you want more oomph.

WJA, as i have a p35 board do you think it would be better to get rid of the 8800GT and either get a 3870x2 or two 3870xt`s in crossfire rather than the sli route ?

my motherboard is as solid as a rock, clocks without major dramas but did have a little problem at the start,

it will only install windows running 2gb ram, once i have updated vista i can then run all 4 sticks.

I'd start with one 3870X2, then, if you feel the need, add another later.

nope rather stick with Nivida thanks, only asked that question about the X boards was because I'm sure I read somewhere that they will soon be out with SLi capabilities as well soon, maybe I'm getting articles mixed up

Skulltrail supports both, but it's megabucks. The current crop of NVidia boards are not as good as the current Intel chipset boards with Intel Quad CPUs. If you're looking at going with a Quad then a P35/P45/X38/X48 board is the only way forward in my opinion. NVidia chipsets are better with dual-cores, but still not good enough in my opinion to warrant the massive cost or compromises involved.

I'm in the same boat as the topic writer, I currently have a Asus p5k-e with an e6750 @3.7. I'm looking to go down the SLI route. I've got a BFG 8800 GTS OC so obviously i'll get another one of them but its the MoBo choice thats the pain. I suppose i could go get a 680i board and be happy untill i next upgrade (6-12 months) as apposed to the 780i, no doubt by the time i do upgrade next there will be an 880i to go with the new 200 core Geforce range.

Decisions, Decisions!

I'm in the same boat, basically the board you have is a good one (I should know - I have it! :D) so going for any board with SLI won't necessarily be an upgrad (unless of course you pay the premium). Stick with what you've got dude, or if you really want to, sell your mobo in the forum here and then you'll have your excuse to get a new board.

I've already run through the options myself, the question to ask yourself is: Are you happy with what you have?

Anandtech's review of the 790i is particularly good. From all the other reviews i've also read, it seems to be equal and it many instances BETTER than the intel chipsets (X48 included) with regard to Quad overclocking. Certainly not for the budget user though.
