right - i know having this livingroom full of equipment should mean that i understand this - and i do [mostly]

my 360 and my ps3 both run into my 1080i hdtv

my 360 uses hd component cable as was standard on the launch consoles
my ps3 uses a 'Monster' HDMI cable [apparently the best]

now on the back of all the games -

you have 1080p,1080i and 720p for most [or at least recent] 360 games

and just 720p on the back of all ps3 games i own [and have looked at in shops]

my tv tells me what res an input is running on at the touch of a button

so the ps3 xmb runs at 1080i [max for my tv] but all games run at 720p
[not tried with a blu ray yet]

and my 360 runs at my tv's max res of 1080i all the time - in dashboard and games that support it

so im left wondering...
without [much] noticable difference between the quality of the games on the two consoles

will the ps3 ever start including 1080 game support

or have i overlooked something technical that makes it more complicated than "bigger res=better looks"

does anybody else have both consoles or know more about the differences

because in my opinion they seems to be on par...

i just cant help but feel that my ps3 isnt making full use of my TV's capabilities - am i wrong by thinking this way?

The only game that I can think of to hand that uses 1080p at the minute for the PS3 is Gran Turismo Prologue.

To be honest there is hardly any Noticable difference between 720p and 1080i. However.

The difference between 720p and 1080p is immense providing you have the equipment to demonstrate 1080p in all its glory.

edit: Also if your TV has the option to display 1:1 pixel mapping try exploring that option. If games are only running in 720p at a 1080i resolution then the image projected on to the TV should not fill the screen. Instead it should only show a max of 1280x720 resolution.

A good example of this is using 1:1 pixel mapping on Uncharted Drakes Fortune using the PS3 at 1080p.

720p is better than 1080i.

p = Progressive Scan
i = Interlaced

Your TV isnt 1080p so noticing a difference between 720p and 1080i is barely noticeable. Your TV basically downscales the 1080i image to 720 anyway. 720p will have smoother motion in games while 1080i "may" have a better still image.

Thinking of something else i think. Getting messed up with music.

Interpolated is actually a Term used in digital camera's as well. Which does actually almost mean the same thing as Interlaced.

Its just a way of saying a Camera does 6 mega pixels Interpolated, where it actually only does 3 mega pixels standard.

So esentially it doubles up, just like interlaced.

Useless information I know. Anyway back OT.

ah right - i got it

cheers for the info guys -

my tv is the flagship bravia from early 2007 [jan sales birthday bargain!]

it doesnt support 1080p.

as both consoles play full screen no problems im not too worried - and the quality of both is great.

i thought there might be a simple explination like that!

will ps3 games start supporting 1080p eventually? i could do with an excuse for a new TV in the next 6 months when the 18 months cover is up on mine!

I would say within the next 12 months the majority of games released will be 1080p :)

Although, I have found that PS1 backwards compatability games do not support 1080p :(

cool - so worth the upgrade i think

may start looking for a 1080p screen as i could still get a fair amount for my bravia

Yeah, maybe that's what im also thinking of! :p

Thanks!

Yes, games like Uncharted, Gears etc won't be done at 1080P this gen, less visual intense games sure.

I'll have to disagree. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue runs at 1080p and looks amazing. It has a few issues with framerates from time to time but im sure they will all be sorted out by the time the game is released.

The only reason the Xbox states 1080i/p on the back of its game boxes are because it can scale to any res thanks to its dedicated hardware scaler chip. Most games are 720p with three at 1080p and a few at 640p.

1280x720 = 921600 pixels
1920x1080 = 2073600 pixels

So, 1152000 pixels more! With that figure alone it'd be highly unlikely there would be any decent games that come out this gen that'll be 1080p and still graphically intense or high frame rate.

i remember support for 1080p being added by a firmware update for 360
i wasnt sure what the ps3 is capable of in this respect

i wish i hadnt started this thread now - im looking at expensive televisions again!

you lot should have just said "your tv is fine - dont spend any more cash!!!"
