Due to a fault with my mobo I need to fit a new one but the last thing I want to do just atm is reinstall everything, has anyone done a mobo swap without reinstalling Vista 64 Ultimate & was it happy? , Both boards are Intel P35 chipsets, Any tips to make Vista happy with this are very much appreciated or is it just a case of cross my fingers & hope:eek: , Any thoughts on just swaping boards & then do a repair install?.

Ta:)

You can do a swap and it may work, but I really would recommend against it. You'll have performance and reliability problems all over the show and a repair install won't help as it doesn't change the configuration of the HAL etc.

If you can possibly reinstall from scratch, do it.

You won't have any problems really if they are both P35 chipsets. I've done this before on other NT based OSes and it works fine.

I needed to do this 3 month ago, with the same make and model number motherboard. Vista seen that I changed something, and I needed to call microsoft for a new key.

I'll keep my fingers crossed then

Can't say I've ever had any issues re-registering my copy of Vista, quick phone call & explanation & they give me a new key:)

if they are both p35s, you should have no problems at all. just uninstall the drivers for the old board first:)

edit: oh yes, you can uninstall them. well, you stoill shouldn't have any problems. its only a few devices that'll differ, the chipset is the same.

I'm running Vista 64 and swapped my Asus P5KC for a Gigabyte P35-DS3R with no problems at all. Just needed to reactivate Vista.

I went from Q6600/Gigabyte DS3P/8800GTS to E8400/Asus X38/3870X2 and it was fine :o

I've got a slipstreamed SP1 disk so I will reinstall the OS soon, just a bit of a pain when I've got work on.

Now you have changed the mobo successfuly try the following to clean out any old drivers lift behind from your old mobo.

1) Goto Start > All Programs > Accesories, right click Command Prompt and select "Run as admin".

2) Type SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 in the CMD window and press enter, this will show all devices that are no longer connected to your system when you open device manager in the next step.

3) Type devmgmt.msc in the CMD window and press enter.

4) When you see the device manager pop up click on the View tab and select Show hidden devices.

5) Uninstall all drivers related to your old mobo, the old drivers that are no longer being used will be greyed out, these are the drivers you need to remove.

Doing this will help prevent conflicts with drivers and software.

Hope this helps!
