stupid presumptions on PSN

So I created my PSN account the other day and choose UK as my place of residence.

Mainly because when I clicked on Belgium it only gives me french or dutch. Now I don't mind XMB in either of these languages but I can tell you the translations in games into French and Dutch are awful and I prefer my games in english.

Last night I go to purchase something from PSN store only to find that because I choose UK I have to have a UK credit card!

Why do they do these things? It is not enough that I live in Europe?

Now I have to create a french/dutch account and (in the case of warhawk) play the games using my Belgian account which is annoying as basically it means all my friends will have to be on that account otherwise my UK account is gimped as I cannot access any payable downloadable content.

A e-mail is winging it's way to Sony as we speak asking why the credit cards are country bound when the EU is for the free movement of goods and services between countries.

They aren't the only culprits. I downloaded MSN from the US but for some reason all the external components like games and whiteboard the instructions are in Dutch. The e-mails from MSN are in Dutch as well despite me downloading from the US site the english version of MSN. I suppose it's smart in marketing terms but the fact is there is nowhere to click to change my language prefs. :(

The joys of being expat.

/rant over.

I'm listening please explain. :D

I have a visa debit card in the uk but it's not one of PSNs options.

The problem is the same with the 360 but there i can buy MS points in the shops to get round the problem.

Shame nothing exists for the PS3

If you an expat, really you should keep a UK account open...

Can't really offer any better advise than that. Sorry.. BUT look at the positive side, you are only a ferry hop away.. Next time you are in blighty, go to a bank and set yourself an account. You'll probably need to provide proof of UK residence though.

setup an entropay account (will take a little while as they need you to very bank account etc). Then you can use that card on your UK PSN account. This is how a lot of us on here buy stuff from the US PSN store.

Sorry would replied sooner was accessing it via my mobile and phone battery went dead. If you need any help just let me know back on my pc now

just read entropay's terms.

The Service Provider shall have the right to request proof of identity, proof of residence and proof of authorisation to use third-party payment services, including without limitation, credit and debit cards and bank accounts, that the User may wish to use to load funds on to the Cards.

I don't live in the UK, I have a UK bank account but it's a giro bank and they flatly refuse to give me a VISA on the account (obvious reasons which I quite understand :o). The UK account has my address in Belgium on it so i'm right royally screwed here.

I've tried opening and account in the UK but it's not at all easy when you are non resident :(

I just wish I could visit the PSN site in English without stating I'm from the UK or Ireland :(

Why can't I just use my belgian card since the site is just translated and the European PSN is the same no matter what EU language you read it in. I've checked the various versions.

Oh apart from them charging 21% vat in Belgium and 17.5% in the UK :p

Which makes games like warhawk cost 25€ in UK and 30€ via Belgium playstation account.

They may state that as being their terms, but they don't actually bother. I have bought from the US PSN store and the Hong Kong one without incident. Why not give it a go - you have nothing to lose?

so what do i do just create an account with my parents address in the uk and add some cash?

what address do you use for the US account? A hotel?

god damn it

In carrying out our monitoring, we have noticed that your account needs further verification in line with current regulations, and we have temporarily restricted your account.

Your EntroPay account will be fully reactivated once we receive the following documents to prove you are the card holder.

1.) Personal Identification: A clear copy of your Passport, Photographic Drivers Licence or I.D. Card (both sides).
2.) Payment Verification: A clear copy of both sides of the credit/debit card (covering the middle 8 digits of the card number, and the 3 digit Card Security Code (CVV/CVV2)) and a clear copy of a recent bank statement on which your name and address are clearly visible.

You can either fax the documents to +44 870 094 1640 or you may prefer to scan and e-mail the documents to us at [email protected]

I fail at fraud :(

Suppose I won't see that 20 quid I loaded either too good to be true :(

From memory you get asked for additional verification (like you have), if you don't enter your driving license numbers as one of your IDs when signing up. (I have recommended many people to Entropay and if they enter drivers license they get account active straight away).

Looks like you are stuck now, although you knew the risk when you filled in the incorrect information. Others say they got activated instantly, but having said that, they had ID to back up their accounts anyway.

Anyway, tough luck. Looks like you will have to call them and explain to get your score back. I am sure they will give it back (normally you could ask for it back from your bank, but I do not know what the rules are in Belgium, plus you lied when you applied for the account etc which may complicate matters.).

You mentioned that you have a "Visa Debit Card" from a UK bank. I am confused why you do not use this. Obviously this will be registered to a UK address etc so you can just sign in to the UK store and use this.

I don't know if you know, but as far as I know anywhere that accepts VISA, accepts VISA Delta/Debit etc.

Certainly on all online sites I use (to buy a wide plethora of stuff, not necessarily from UK sites) I always pick the "VISA" option and enter my debit card details and never had an issue.

I pay for all purchases on the UK PSN with the same debit card.

I don't understand why you didn't just setup your entropay account with your legit details... it's the PSN store where you use a bogus address.???

Really I'll give that a try so if it says visa I can still use the VISA debit card? Thanks RP.

I did use my driving licence so i'm about to scan it and send a copy to them luckily I kept my UK driving licence with my UK address.

The site entropy is very sneaky after I activated my account it said sucess your account is now active etc you can now add cash. It wasn't until I added the cash they the said the account was inactive :( I think that's a bit unfair on their part. Good job I didn't try to get a USD account.

I really need a UK account now as I bought singstar and the Belgian version has different songs (french and dutch) which I don't even want to attempt to sing.

Just email them. I did and they are quite approachable and will give you a quick reply.
