Awesome price drop, I cant recommended the 360 to enough people in terms of gaming, its Next-gen back catalogue is awesome, I mean games like Crackdown for £10 is awesome BRAND NEW.

It has really set the standard and I wonder how much of the price drop is down to William Gates retirement in the summer, the 360 can go lower but how low can the PS3 go.

I don't understand all these people buying a 2nd one because the price has dropped. What have you been gagging to do with 2 consoles that suddenly now becomes justifiable with a 40 pound price drop?

(just curious, as it's not the kind of item you buy as a spare etc!!)

So the gf and I can play on a whole screen each, and so I can have one in the bedroom and one in the living room on the projector without having to lug the 360 to and fro (use the 360 as a HTPC replacement in the living room).

Can't imagine it would have anything to do with Bill Gates retirement tbh...

I must admit I'm sorely tempted to do the same, even more so with a price drop. I might wait until I see the new prices reflected in the 2nd hand prices though, and I've got to get my head around the gamertag portability issues i'd face....

NO quite simply the proper solution is 2x 360s and 2x PS3 with a wii for good measure. Oh and of course using a PS3 as a replacement HTPC rather than a 360.

That work for me.

Regards the announcement and its timing i find that the release of GT5 Prolouge and a PS3 bundle box on the 28th just might have a lot to do with it.

I'm not buying a second immediately because the price has dropped but:-

a)I'm glad it has dropped because our entire TV watching setup depends on the 360 (at the moment, if PlayTV was out I'd try that), if it breaks I have to buy a new one or risk being murdered.

b) I am slightly tempted to buy an arcade once my warranty on my first one has run out and recase the original, my replacment aluminium case plans (scribblings) are somewhere on my desk.

Does the PS3 play high definition HD-DVD rips? Or is it as picky as the 360 when it comes to deciding what files it will and wont play?

Whats HD-DVD?
Come now

Its possible for the PS3 to play BD Roms or Divx, MP2, MP4 and of course PC converted files.
A PC is still king when it comes to codecs and playback options, a PS3 is easy to use no hassle and quieter than most 360s or indeed PCs

Personally i use and prefer sometimes my PS3 for movie watching over my PC even with both connected to my Projector via HDMI

Have these prices come into effect anywhere at all? I've looked at the most common places but they still have the old prices.

I said HD-DVD as they'd been cracked last time I looked which meant that it was easier to ahem rip your movies to the hard drive, unsure about BD ROM.

Will probably have to put together a HTPC then, wanted to get away with it cheaply but it can't be done!

When both blu-ray and hd-dvd are ripped they are converted using a codec into a different file type - from that point onwards they have no connection to the format they were originally printed on, they have the potential to be exactly as compatible with a PS3/xbox360 as each other if the same codec is used..

It all depends whether the PS3 can play the codec that the hd-dvd was converted to. If it is .avi, .mp4, .wmv etc then it'll be fine, however it won't like files like .mkv for example.

I know that, but I was hoping you'd catch the hint ;)

Does the PS3 play back copies of high definition media obtained via the internet? avi is just a container, there can be all sorts of different audio and video codecs in an avi, so I can't see how the PS3 can play all avi's.

Is it as picky as the 360, which can only play the most recent incarnations of DivX and XviD?
