Short answer yes, my PS3 has issues playing pretty much all of my xvids where as my 360 played them all fine

Hmmm, I found the 360 to be picky, wouldn't play any of my simpsons DVD rips that were more than a couple of years old...yet you say the PS3 has issues and your 360 is fine...which makes the PS3 even worse. Guess it won't be being a cheap HTPC afterall

PS3 can play any Divx file encoded in anything above Divx 3 codec, I have found maybe a 20% of my rips had problems but the rest worked sweet.

In the long run the PS3 will have full divx certification, the 360 which does seem to be have a slightly better range of compatibility at the moment must be connected to the net for this to work and has not been confirmed by divx to be also getting full certification.

Do you copy the Xvids to the PS3 hard drive? If not that may be the problem

it all depends on your codecs mate, I feel the 360 is better for Xvids but the PS3 seems to support my dvix's better.

Yes I've tried playing them on the PS3 natively and they wasn't supported, my 360 played them all fine.

Interesting, as I have found very few files that are xvid/divx that won't play on ps3 (I haven't tested the 360 playback as extensively).

these price drops really make the 360 a bargin, do you rekon we will see a £200 ps3 soon?

xbox360 prem + GTA4 for £200 mmm....

that would pricey against ps3 + gta4 for £300

As a neutral I wasn't really sure whether to go for the 360 or PS3. Now with the new prices coming into place I will definitely be going for the 360. Microsoft has made a great decision!

This depends on whether you are using the forum default which is 30 posts per page, or you have manually increased this to 40 60 or 80.

But I sense you know this already as you have obviously changed yours, from the default, or would be seeing 2 pages. So I am now wondering what relevance your post had in the first place?

It all depends whether the PS3 can play the codec that the hd-dvd was converted to. If it is .avi, .mp4, .wmv etc then it'll be fine, however it won't like files like .mkv for example.

Thats only true if its been converted after being ripped, the most used program leaves the structure of both intact (menus etc), conversion generally discards the menus etc..
