Teachers Call to Ban Homework

ridiculous. kids have it so easy these days.

no wonder half of them have lack discipline and social skills.

We never had homework in Primary School but my sister who's ten years younger went to the same one and she had homework, I agree that they should start later in secondary school

Homework in Primary is fine, but it depends what it is. Personally I think its probably quite beneficial if they get given some creative work, like make a drawing etc. It gets the parents involved with their children and their education. Although the problem is then the fact that many parents just don't care...

why do you think this?

surely without homewrok they are left to do nothing but cause trouble in the evening.

on the flip side, with homework it keeps them in and not socilising etc...
If parents let 8 year olds roam the street at night then I'm afraid setting them homework won't do anything.

It would be better if each kid was forced to do sport every night

From memory only about a third of the information required to pass a degree is taught in lecturers, the rest you are expected to go and learn for yourself. If kids are coming from a school background where everything they need to know has been spoon fed to them by teachers then they are really going to struggle in university in my opinion

It is a bit much for Primary schools, homework should start at Secondary school.

i dont think it should. doing a few sums during weekdays and learning some spelling/doing some writing over the weekend help kids to learn time management skills and teaches them responsibility

as a kid id probably rather do homework i hated sports

We had it from Primary 3 but it was so easy that you could do it during the class , it was mainly for the "slower" kids who needed the extra attention. I think it's useful at primary perhaps collecting different leaves and such simple stuff. Better get them used to some homework for the mountain they will get in high school.

realistically this is really fuzzy logic. kids are unhappy with school what makes kids unhappy homework get rid of homework = happy kids.

homework makes kids unhappy in the short term there not looking at the underlying issues

I was never set homework at primary school, started at secondary school, as did my friends and none of us are having any problems at university now.

I personally think homework for primary school is a waste of time really.

Training for sport will teach you more about later life than any amount of homework will.

Excellent idea, my GF is a teacher who has far too much marking and planning to do, so she will get her life back :)

I can see the arguments for both sides really, but as stated above surely the real issue is why are children supposedly so unhappy?

PRIMARY SCHOOL. I'm sure ten year olds aren't causing all the ills of society in the evenings ;)
