After reading about patriotism, citizenship and a suggestion that youths swear an allegiance to the queen, I was wondering how patriotic most Brits are. I myself wouldn’t think of myself as being very patriotic – I think we have a mixture of things to be proud of and things to be ashamed of. Moving on from that thought I’ve listed the things I like and dislike about living in Britain. I’m fully aware that some of these things are influenced by the type of person I am so obviously there are things that could be contested depending on your own views. Instead of another ‘contest the issues’ thread let’s hear what you like and dislike about Britain, and whether you think there are other countries you’d be happy living in. And before anyone calls treason, I’m not looking to emigrate, and am happy with the country overall.

1) Likes
Military standards – by no means a superpower these days but I like that we’re still of high quality
Industrial/scientific history – huge amounts of breakthroughs
Landscape – particularly the varied countryside
Education – good access to education and I’d like to think we have a fairly well informed society as a whole
Democracy – might not be perfect but in comparative terms it is good. At least we have the right to protest and question what’s going on.

2) Dislikes

Weather – windiest country in Europe, half assed winter
Drinking culture – I like a drink but I think we have too many people who frequently go too far
Justice system – sentencing and prisons need some serious thought, stop the suing culture developing
Welfare system – not really a massive issue for me but too many people abuse the current system

3) Other Countries

Canada
And if language wasn’t a barrier...
Scandinavian countries (and Finland)
France (uhh controversial)

I love Great Britain, unfortunately I don't live in Great Britain any more, i just live in Britain

You've missed out our literature and language. Also I know there might be a few problems with our justice system now but you've got to remember that many many countries based their laws and justice system on ours so it can't be that bad!

Great Britain is pretty awesome.

The reason I'm proud of living here isn't because I think I own it or anything, it's more that living here and growing up with the culture around me has moulded me in to the person I am today.

:Edit: For the record, I'm a bit of a patriot. However I do also feel similar feelings towards other countries, just not so strongly.

I find very little to be proud of. OK we did alright in the War, mainly thanks to the belated entry of the US. At least we held our own when the rest of Europe was falling. Since then, we have been a bankrupted country which gave away or ignored many of the great inventions which helped us fend off the Nazis, which may have helped us stay a serious world power. If we had developed Colossus or the Jet engine, we would be a lot better off than we are now.

I am proud of myself and my family, thats about it.

The best part of being in this country is the fact we do not have huge spiders and nasty big creatures like that.
