TomTom GPS Traffic updates

Does anyone know if to get the traffic updates you still need to use a mobile phone to download the data and connect to the GPS using bluetooth?

That's how my 910 model does it but looking at the 720 it says it comes with a 'free traffic receiver', how does that work?

The traffic receiver works via radio signals using radio stations which transmit information about traffic problems

Not sure how it compares to using a mobile phone but a heck of a lot cheaper!

I'd considered the receiver for my One but from reading reviews it's absolutely pants and hardly every gets signal

Remember that classic fm is the tmc channel and reception isnt the best in some places.

It does work quite well, I have the unit on my 920. It seems pretty accurate so far (about 4 weeks of doing 200 miles a day). There has been the odd false alarm but it's been right on the ball when there have been major A road or motorway closures.

I hear the traffic updates via bluetooth / mobile phone are more accurate, but obviously that option isn't free unless you have a free data connection. I'm pretty happy with the free solution.
