Hi all,

I know a lot of people here use Ebay, and I also do on occasion. But I’ve never actually gotten down to selling things.

I have quite a lot of old junk from when I was a kid, and have horded stuff over the years. So is it an easy thing to do? What do people sell to keep the money rolling in?

Are there any sites which tell you what’s hot and not etc?

If anyone has any info to share etc would be helpful

Im not sure if this applies to all but selling for me on ebay has been abit of a hassle. Not the listing the item side of things, thats actually very easy. But i do get trouble with buyers. Mainly they buy something then never pay. Happened to me quite a bit and is very annoying. Another thing is i would recommed paypal as your payment method, i have taken other methods in the past such as postal orders, and even tho i email them several times with who to make it out to , they still manage to get my name wrong. So from now on i try just to sell things which cost more such as my computer parts when i upgrade,as low cost items can be hassle for little money.

The actual process is really straight forward. You get charged a listing fee and then a fee based on the selling price (as commission). It is therefore better to sell more expensive things.

High postage items such as big books, furniture etc don't do too well due to added cost.

I have *sold* two mobile phones on eBay and had scammers both times (didn't fall into the trap though!). So phones are a no ... as are MP3 players.

Clothes do not sell well unless you have something like a branded coat/jacket. T-shirts etc will not sell.

Baby stuff goes well e.g. toys, pushchairs, cots, high chairs etc.

DVDs go OK ... got a tenner for Monty Python box set a few weeks back.

Best thing to do is to search for the item you want to sell and check the "completed listings" box on the right hand side of the results page once you have searched for something. You then get an idea of the kind of prices things are going for and know what to hope for.

In my experience, computer parts sell very well.

Unless you talking about lots of medium prices items £10-100 then I really wouldn't bother.

You just get ****ed over and over and over imo.

If you do use ebay its fairly straight foward. Few simples rules though

Only use paypal
Only ship to confirmed addresses
Always send via recorded post

If you follow those rules you *should* be okay. :)

good luck

I haven't confirmed my address, and have used ebay to buy over 120 times and its never been an issue.

I've never been an issue for anyone for that matter either :p

I only buy with cheques and haven't had any problems yet. Hate waiting for delivery though, cause a couple of times in the past, the Post Man and Parcelforce have dropped parcels of at the wrong address. Only the people who got them knew me I may never have recieved them.

I've just sold my first item (old lappy, a Compaq x1000) on ebay. Was actually rather painless. had to dig up some old rudimentary knowledge of html coding tags <p>, <br>, <image> with address click, to put the listing page in order, rather than pay to use one of them theme ones. worked quite well. also found under google some free image hosting things that work well with the ebay picture slideshow, so that was a plus.

mine ended up cash upon collection, so easy peasy.

Okay, say I need to post a large item a PC steering while for instance. I've no idea about postage cost is there anyway to find out?

So I don’t rip people off or vice versa

Also is it best just to sell in UK?

Be a man and guess :p

To be honest - People never put up the *exact* postage anyway, just look at other auctions for similar items see what they used should be a fair indication.

fair do's , what if an item needs to be delivered via carrier? is there an option for that ?

I would'nt bother with ebay as they have raised feed by 40% for low value items and are stopping sellers from leaving feedback, when this happens you will get so many complaints.

There are loads of dodgy buyers, shame you cant block buyers if they have a certain amount of negs, then you get the ones that dont pay and try to haggle.

Its very easy to get a refund from paypal, basically you either say you never received it or its faulty as the seller cant prove it paypal always side with the buyer.

Also About 1% parcels go missing but 3% went missing during christmas, I would say half are fraudulent claims, then 25% customer never collects from sorting office and the rest are lost / stolen.

You cant claim value of the item sold only what it cost you and rm will not refund postage either.

Its not worth selling as ebay take a 10% cut including paypal so you can see who is making the real money.

So what do you mean exactly? Didn't quite get that one :p

Say i sell a CD to someone , i can just nip to the post office and send it.

If the parcle is quite big , say erm a telescope could i still give this to the post office or would carrier be better?

I think I am willing to give Ebay a chance as there is allot of stuff I need to get rid off etc. & yeah I know Ebay + PP make LOADS of money :( have no other alternative as I want the stuff gone.

There are things I want to sell but don't want them going for next to nothing :)

Like, I have a PC I want to sell. Ideally I would like around £200 but I know the risk is that I end up getting nowhere near that.

Ah I see,

Well there's nothing wrong with the post office - There prices are quite competitive and you can go there as / when you need too.

With courier you've usually got to be in for a whole day / half day to wait for them to pick the item up.

There's little difference between the two imo. Main difference being courier next day is usually more reliable than royal mail (unless you use special delivery).

Prices wise, for BIG things and i mean BIG things (10kgs+) couriers come out on top of royal mail I reckon.

Also depends on value, expensive stuff I would Special delivery / Courier everytime.

^ okay thanks for clearing that up :) is there anything else i should be aware of ?

any handy tools i can add to firefox ?:)
