i'm thinking of purchasing one of these (one of the chinese copies!) for my 400D because the grip is a bit midgy for me taste? will the verticle grip improve this?

Also, i shoot portrait fairly often, do the portrait-orientation buttons work as they would in landscape?

Personally i wouldn't get the cheap one i would go for the proper canon one i use to have one on my 400D, and i tell ya it was like night & day with it on for handling.

I really like the grip on my 350D it makes the camera so much easier to hold in both horizontal and portrait due to the extra space for your fingers. The buttons also make it a lot easier to take portrait shots. The grip i brought was 3rd party but they are meant to be made in the same factory the official ones are made in.

the canon grip is like 3 times the price of the chinese one!

Some of the chinese knockoffs also lack stuff like the shutter button, scrollwheel or the two hotbuttons at the back of the unit.

my third party grip has all the functionality for £30 quid iirc off the bay £7 for some hi capacity batts.

I have never had a problem withit however i do know people have commented that the losen after a while and you have to tighten every so often.

I dont think the canon ones offer much more in build quality since it is made from the same sort of plastics

bit of a hot topic over on POTN. personal preference really.. to quote me:

Me on POTN said:
When I had a 300D and later 20D I had a grip for them and they stayed on constantly. The cameras just feel better and I find it easier to shoot in portrait mode.

contrastly, i have never had a grip on my old 300D or my current 20D. even with the sig 70-200 attached i see no need personally. hand holding the lens and camera is perfectly achievable for long periods if held correctly as jon said, supporting with your left hand aroundabout where the lens tripod mount is.

again regarding battery life even using AI servo i can see a whole days shooting on one 3rd party 1200MAh (i think) battery.

but then, i guess it just comes down to personal preference.
