Rumor that floating around has it that the 50D will no longer have a 1.6x crop sensor but a hole new 1.3x crop digic IV 12mp sensor, that well in delvopment as we speak.

Thing is thou if this is true what about the EF-S lenses that are designed for 1.6 bodies hmmmm

I can't see them dropping the 1.6 crop sensor as it going to annoy a lot of Canon owners and it will bump up the cost of their entry models making them uncompetitive. Also there doesn't really seem to be anything wrong with the 1.6 crop for the majority of picture people take you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a photo form a 40D and a 5D.

canon have officially stated fairly recently that the APS-S sensor and EF-S lenses are here to stay, because of the higher costs involved with full-frame.

Long term APS-C will stay as will EF-S lenses but Canon will just introduce new camera models.
Something has to improve on the xxD range as currently the gap is closing between it and the lower end xxxD

A xxxxD and xxxD will have a 1.6x sensor whilst the 50D will go 1.3x and eventually full frame.

I can't think that they would bother with 1.3x crop that would be pointless. I see it going full frame eventually but not at 50D. We have the full frame 3D and 7D to come first ;)

tbh theres no point guessing what features it will have. after all the rumour was that they were releasing a 5DMK2 and they went and released the 450D instead..

With the increase in competition from Nikon and the upcoming full frame Sony sensor, I do see Canon going with the flow, and all of their pro and prosumer range going to full frame. Having said that, I simply can't see them abandoning the 1.6 crop for a long time, simply because of the number of EF-S lenses on the market.

Personally I've avoided going anywhere near an EF-S lens on the grounds that I knew I'd end up with a full frame or 1.3 crop at some point.

Introducing a new 1.3 format sensor (other than a replacement for the 1D) just is not going to happen IMO, and I would expect the next version of the 1D to drop it in favour of a FF sensor. The next version of the digic processor should be powerfull enough to process the FF images at the required speeds (when paralleled up ;)).

I also don't see the xx range of cameras shifting away from 1.6 format for some time (5+ years) The quality out of the 40D is good, and has room for improvement (D300)... There also seems little point in producing £800 EF-S lenses if there is no future in a "serious" 1.6 model.

The 5D, is Canons model for the "serious" prosumer, and I don't see any circumstance that the model will drop away from FF..

Where did this rumour originate? more abject speculation on dpreview?

my dads brothers wifes friends sister in-laws husband told a mate of mine that the 50d will not be 1.3x :)

Personally i think it logical to go 1.3x with future cosumer & semi pro comsumer camera's basically because the increase of MP there no getting away from this they just going to keep on increasing them.
How many more light cells could you sqeeze into a 1.6x sensor before you start getting hit with poor image quality & noise no matter if it digic IV,V,VI.

How they would combat the 1.6x factor is to do something that i think the Nikon D3 does, and that is to switch of part of sensor basically making 1.6x for those with expensive EF-S lenses.

this works on nikons because they aren't SBF lenses. Nikon DX lenses are crop-only because the optics are not designed to cover a larger sensor.

on canons, this is also the case, but in addition, the lenses protrude to the rear making them physically incompatible with full-frame cameras.

Also, by using only a crop-sized proportion of the frame, precious image size is lost. why would people pay more for a camera that has a full frame sensor, then disable some of it in order to use their existing lenses?
