new ATI Radeon R700 chipset

4870X2 will be my next card unless nVidia bring out something considerably better than the 9 series.

hmmm. i may do the same as you - Im still think about to replace my Geforce 8800GTX by buy new Radeon HD4870 x2 when it comes up, I wait until July-August also ATI will launch new R800 late next year but dont know what type of model.

seems nVidia really made a blunder with this card, and if R700 can perform, well, we'll see a reversal of last year, and perhaps see AMD/ATI start making some real $$$

if AMD and ATi can get their products right... man, that company will rake in the dough... not sure AMD is up to the challenge, though

Neither company makes much money out of high-end parts. Its the low-mid and low-end stuff that counts. ATI are looking very good at the moment in these areas, feature-rich cards and excellent performance for the price.

True that,

They are certainly in need of more prestiege which comes from having a strong high end. And, in this part of the industry, a strong high end equates to the best high end (since you are either the best or not in a 2 player market). Who ever has that, atleast from the sales figures I have seen (admitedly I dont look at them in any great detail), tends to control the lions share of the market.

Nvidia rekon they have their next gen GT200's all ready now and waiting for the R700's, so its no wonder they just rebadged their old 8800's, no point doing much else to them if they gona can em after 3 month. :D

most profit will be made in the budget to midrange sectors. neither amd or nvidia sell enough top end gpu's to make a dent in their net profits.

up until amd bought out ati, it was the sale of flash memory that made up most of their profits. the cpu side was all over the place but never a big earner like the flash devision.

High end helps to driver low end sales. The Halo effect...

Also, ATi was always in need of better marketing department, and better dev relations. TWIMTBP is all over the place, where is the AMD alternative?

My X1650 Pro handled Crysis just fine!

(at 1024x768 on low/medium <<)

Truth is, no, we don't know. It probably will. How well is anyone's guess.

Well im expecting the 4870x2 to be a very good card but im surprised as I thought the R700 was supposed to be a multiple core card. Obviously that has been moved back to R800.

Then we will have to wait for the price and the performance of this product :)
I really hope it performs very well to force Nvidia into releasing some new stuff and drive the prices down in Chinatown!
