Just bought this for £49.99, for that price its a steal, wanted a standalone dvd player for ages because the 360 is good but too noisy for movies. Plus it comes with 2 HD DVD 300 and Bourne supremacy, should be good quality on my Sony D3000. I think I will rent movies instead of buying then.

Whats the best HD DVD out at the moment in terms of quality.

What's the point in renting HD-DVD's, you are aware websites in the states that ship to the UK are selling them dirt cheap right? (and HD-DVD is region free)

AFAIK I never saw HD-DVD's for rental at Blockbuster, maybe some on line places do them.

Unfortunately the HD-DVD playing surface is not very robust (unlike Blu-Ray which has a protective layer) so very prone to damage. As it only seemed to take a slight scratch or mark on a HD-DVD to severely affect playback, the media would not likely survive many loans out in the rental market.

I've rented over 50 HD DVDs and only came across two that wouldn't play. That's no worse a ratio than the hundreds of DVDs I've rented.

LoveFilm have been great for HD DVDs.

It came today, nice piece of kit, really impressed with the HD DVD and SD DVD time to start buying HD DVDs at £6.66 a pop.

Don't suppose anyone can email me and let me know some of these american sites that sell to england aside from the auction site we all know :) Would be nice to find a reliable import company!

What a steal. I don't plan on going Blu-Ray for some time so this might be a great stop gap :)

If only I could find it for £49.99 :p

EDIT: I found it, but there is no 'buy' button :(

£49.99 is great for a top quality upscaling player, so to get free HD-DVD features is a bonus :)

My Dad is wondering what to do with his EP-35, but it's a shame to sell it!

This is possibly the most pointless buy ever. Why not just wait? HD-DVD has lost all support and you're going to watch these films how many times?

You do realise that :

A) It will still play HD-DVDs even tho the format has stopped, there are hundreds of films out there going very cheap.

B) It is the best sub £100 upscaling dvd player by miles, only the Oppo starts to beat it and thats over 100 notes more

C) £50 is peanuts for a DVD player !

There are many more pointless things in this world than this player - your post for one ;)

I think he means that its pointless to buy into something that is already dead. Granted its a good price for an upscaling player and HD-DVD's will be cheap. But if you add £50 + average £8 per HD-DVD and you say that there are hundreds out there, that money could be going towards a Blu-Ray player or PS3.

Say if you bought 20 HD-DVD's at around £8 average, the total you will have paid will be £210 for the player and movies. £50 extra gets you a PS3 or you can get standalone BR players for around that price.

I'm not stopping anyone from getting HD-DVD's cause they will be very cheap and there are some good ones out there.

Yes but you would own those HD-DVDs whilst you wouldnt own any if you got a PS3. and as they are cheap to buy if there are some titles you really want will be getting same quality as blu ray but much cheaper which may take a while to get to blu ray and will be expensive when released too, therefore saving a fair whack on your hd upgrade.

I dont think this makes any sense but i'm going with it.

Yea i know what you mean. Thought the same when i was posting that you dont have any Blu-Rays, but you have the player.

It is good since its cheap. Hopefully BR's will come down a tad in price since they dont really have an HD competitor anymore.

Competition drops prices, not a lack of it.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/har...blu-ray-player-prices-rise-as-hd-dvd-dwindles

The end of the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD was supposed to entice more consumers to invest in next-generation players and lead to falling prices as companies leveraged economies of scale and improved manufacturing technology. Long term, this may yet happen, but the recent demise of HD DVD has led to a notable price increase over the past few weeks. As TG Daily reports, many Blu-ray player prices have actually risen since the first of the year...
