The Budget - Band G Tax £1000!

Be honest driving for anything other than bare essential journeys in quickly being portriad as anti-social, like drinking or smoking.

I really can't see it getting any better unless we all drive 1.1 diesel fart boxes. The only promise as motorists we get is that they will rear end us year on year.

This has sort of made my mind up that I really am not going to bother to get a car I enjoy to drive anymore, it's just getting ridiculously expensive and you live in fear of what these numpties will dream up next.

Just thought of something, when the government introduced those HIPs for new homes now all estate agents are saying they are free, they are just adding them to the cost of the estate agents fee, the motor company's will do the same, "BMW X5 FREE TAX for a year" "small print we added the tax onto the price of a X5, if every motor company does it then they don't lose sales and the claim some if back from the government, I think its more to scare people into Environmental issues.

But it is completley unrealistic. It should be on fuel only, that is the only real way to tax those who use the roads more. And the 118d is FAR more harmful to the enviroment then a 530i.

Exactly. Therefore the people that drive more, pay more. Simple and Fair. Like Fox said earlier. Just because he and other people have a really high emissions isn't fair if they only drive say 2 days a week. Whereas a taxi driver with a lesser emission rate pays less.... yet drives more? It's crazy!

are the c02 emission classes for the cars based on MOT results or the manufacturer specification? If its from the manufacturer you could just whack a massive turbo on :D

Turbo won't help, you will see smaller turbocharged engines replacing larger engines though

For info they are from the NEDC, new european drive cycle. All new cars have to undergo this test and be 'rated' before they can be sold in the UK.

This has 2 parts, Urban and extra Urban. They are combined with 3 Urban cycles followed by the extra Urban. The average g/km is then calculated to rate the car's emissions.

It's the same as they use for calculating MPG, CO2 and MPG are directly proportional.

I still think it's silly, once you have paid the tax you wont think too much about driving your car. If the cost was added to the fuel, then you may think twice about the shorter trips and walk/use a bike/car share. This will have an impact on reducing emissions.

When will they start taxing the most polluting cows is what I want to know! Although any born pre 2001 obviously have less polluting flatulence.

How much is a 1.3 Yaris SR 133 g/km going to be, its £120.00 at the moment. Seems its gone up a whole £5 from 2009

Hang on, so my dads Saab 9-5 2.3 (240g/Km) will going from £210 to £430 by 2011? Is that right?

The car was registered in 04 when nothing was known of these stupid price hikes, so why should it be back dated?

This budget has made me decide to buy a Corvette now before it's 5.7l V8 is banned from this land completely, and I'll pay the same amount of tax as I would on my 1.8 Mx-5 due to it's age.

Screw global warming, I'm going all out to kill the planet now baby. :p

Exactly, its stupid. I can see parts of the second hand car market crashing in prices due to thiese rules.

It's ok he can get a low tax brand new car that would be much better for the planet:rolleyes:

This is exactly what im hoping might happen with the value of my car for example, it will be £200 to tax under the new rules, yet an IDENTICAL car just slightly newer will be £455. Suddenly makes mine look a lot more attractive than it is currently?

My plan is similar - tax expires in December. Will then buy 6 months, and in February, SORN the car for a week or two. SORN acknowledgement arrives, cash the tax in (New rules say you can only cash the tax in if youve SORN'd the car or sold it etc), then re-apply for a new tax disc giving me until February 2010.

Yes, its hassle but it will save me £230!

Are you sure?

6 months tax would be ~£120. Cash in tax after two months of the six would see a refund of ~£80. 12 months tax from Feb 09 to Feb 10 would be £210 meaning your total tax bill from Dec 08 to Feb 09 would be ~£250. Alternatively, 12 months tax in Dec 08 would cost you £210, plus two twelvths of £415 from Dec 09 to Feb 09 for a total bill of £279.17.

SORNing in Feb 09 would save you in the region of £30.

If your tax expires before September 08, it would be worth getting 6 months rather than 12, otherwise, the savings are barely worth the effort.
