Spec me some progressive rock?

Unfortunately none of these are progressive rock. Seether is grungey thingy, Dream Theatre is modern power(ish) metal, Disturbed is a nu metal hybrid and Rammstein is industrialized metal thingy.

Seether - you could try Alter Bridge
Dream Theater - Symphony X
Disturbed - donno
Rammstein - try Laibach, it's what Rammstein copy.

Getting into a discussion about what is and isn't 'progressive' is probably one of the biggest can of worms you can open :D So although some may agree with you saying DT aren't progressive rock, some would also argue that they are.

What I think a lot of people would accept though is that the term 'progressive' has become connected with many clichés now such as longer tracks, time signature changes, incorporation of vastly contrasting styles etc. Whereas the term 'progressive' should really mean a band who are always trying to change their sound, again it's all open for interpretation I think.

I think it's not gonna hurt anyone to just listen to ANYTHING that's put under the bracket of 'progressive' so far everything mentioned in this thread is probably gonna be of interest to fans of the OP's mentioned bands.

Check out Meshuggah too :)

Spock's Beard and Transatlantic are my most listened to prog bands at the moment, along with Porcupine Tree. (which is an absolute definite must-listen!)

well, I've listened to Leftoverture several times and I can't really see where Pure Reason Revolution, Oceansize, Porcupine Tree, Amplifier, The Mayan Factor, dredg, A Perfect Circle, Tool, VAST, Aereogramme et al got their sound from. I'll give it a listen again, but I'm fairly sure it's not changed that much!

I'd like to see who those bands cite as their influence.

Hawkwind Prog Rock!

Dream Theater are a fantastic band, just listen to 'A Change of Seasons' such an amazing song :D

Can also recommend A Perfect Circle as well :)

stay away from anything with mike portnoy in it unless you want the drums to over power everything.

Hawkwind Prog Rock!

well yeah - they can cite who they want, that won't change whether or not I think they sound similar ;)

I think Hawkwind are proggy! This is why I hate generalisation of music, everyone's got an opinion on that as well. I expect that if you went through my music library you'd probably disagree with most of my genre choices

Thanks for suggestions, have heard of some of the bands and will investigate some of the others.

I do like heavy, powerful sounds. However, played my one and only Neil Young Album - sleeps with angels the other day.

I bought it several years ago, played it once, thought it was crap and forgot about it. Ressurected it and i'm being tormented by its tunes as i've given it a more thorough listen! Haven't a clue what genre to stick him in, but i like it! Strange the way an album can grow on you!

Not really.

Trolling would be saying something like "Listen to metallicas and justice for all album if you want to hear some good bass riffs"

What a thread, never thought I would hear of "Spocks beard" spoke of here, to see so many YES lovers ( At Uni I used to play the Yes Album every Sunday all day and love it ) and to top it off more evidence that there is no bass line on Justice for all! prog rock = YES earlier the madder!

One of the best DVD's I've ever bought is Spocks Beard - Don't Try This At Home especially with the Making Of V on it also.

Believe it or not I only started dating my future wife in 1974 because she had 3 YES albums in her collection.
I had plenty of girlfriends but I couldn't keep them because of my love of rock.
One night I got talking to her and she said she had The Yes Album, Fragile and Topographic Oceans and I thought 'Thats the girl for me' and we're still together after 34 years :)

No mention of the ultimate in Prog Jethro Tull:confused:

Grimley said:
Alan Parsons Project
Tales of Mystery and Imagination and iRobot are good albums, liked them for years.

Hawkwind are progressive too.

Frank Zappa? Listen to Fillmore East - June 1971 If thats commercial anything then I'll eat an American rock star(As long as they've got a hit single in the charts):D

They're Folk rock.
You wouldn't believe how much stuff I've got of Tull

Hawkwind are progressive too.

I know you're named after an Hawkwind track but I will never accept that they are prog.

My definition of Prog were bands who started in one time signature, went through several other time signatures and then ended in another one and of course musicianship of the highest order where they were virtually classically trained.
Hawkwind were none of this.

I always remember their singer in the t'early 70's repeatedly throwing a sword into the stage and at one point it missed and hit somebody in the audience but luckily he was hit by the handle.

I've given up reading people's posts on here as very few of you actually know what progressive rock is [edit: with the exception of dmpoole who does]. What prog rock is in it purest forms is NOT Opeth or Muse or QOTSA lol.
Prog is one of my favourite genres of music so what I would say is listen to the following which are definately prog, and if anyone decides otherwise then give them a swift kick to the ovaries.

Quintessential prog:

King Crimson. In the Court of The Crimson King should be a good starting point for your progression into prog. Follow that with In The Wake of Poseidon or Red.

Emerson Lake and Palmer. If you dont understand music all that well I'd save these guys till later once you get to grips with prog.

Hawkwind. Not my personal favourites or even a regular on my playlist, however, they are a good example of progressive rock.

Gentle Giant. I'm not going to rant and rave about how amazing they are, but if its prog you want, then that is exactly what you will get with GG.

Yes. Many will cite Yes first in a list of prog. Some fantastic examples of the genre are to be found, and if you played the Homeworld games you'll eventually hear a familiar song!

Pink Floyd. This is technically prog. However, not all of their music is too progressive but the examples of the genre within their music are to be found in the following: Animals, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother Suite. These albums have consistently progressive themes in them, whereas some of their other albums will contain prog songs but not an overall sentiment of listening to prog.

I have worked through the discographies of ALL the above with the exception of Yes and Hawkwind [working through Yes as we speak]

The following are sometimes classified as prog, due to some elements of the progressive genre appearing in their music. However, they are in some cases more modern than the above and also contain more metallic elements within:

Tool. Fantastic I think, but I see them as metal first and foremost. However it is very easy to put forward a case for them being progressive.

Dream Theater. The misspelling of Theatre always bugged me lol. I like this band and have gone through their discography. I recommend the album A Change of Seasons to see some modern prog at its best; especially the title song. Octavarium itself has some elements, and you can find the rest for yourself.

I really hope that this gets read and doesnt disappear in a day because I've spent months of my life listening to prog and would love more people to get into it rather than panning it as 'gay' or 'boring' because they prefer tri-chordal filth that gets published in many genres and especially in the mainstream genre which is **** to be honest.
I wish you many many happy hours of listening!

I just was given a copy of the latest Symphony X album by our drummer, fantastic stuff! I'd never really heard any of their stuff before, despite being a long time Dream Theater fan (SX are like a heavier DT). They are definitely worth a listen of you want some "recent" prog, I see mentions of Jethro Tull, Yes etc and they definitely are IMHO the "fathers/originators of prog" but there's a second generation around now and quite different from the "older" stuff :) Not that Yes et al are bad, love the stuff but I'm more a recent DT/Spocks Beard level kind of guy.

get over yourself, how can YOU define what prog-rock is, or "Proper" Prog rock, people interperate what they think is prog, its not a look at how big my e-peen is im the god of prog-rock.
