what dept did you do your placement in btw ?
if you do end up in primary care, be sure to say hi if you ring emis. Emis is a funny old company, theres 2 parts. Theres software support, lots of various depts all based out of Fullford House near Leeds Bradford airport. The requirements for software support are basically just being a bit IT savvy. As a result, most of the people you speak to dont have a clue. Its a running joke at our place how bad software support are.
I work in the other half, called Systems support. We cover everything thats not the emis software. Newham PCT in london actually pay us to run their PCT helpdesk for them, so we take care of networking / printers / desktops / printers / infrastructre etc.. basically anything other than emis application itself. Our work varies, some PCTs like barnet, like to pay us to cover everything for them. So we're a HP Compaq and Brother approved warranty repair centre. So we can cover just about anything. Then you get PCTs like wakefield PCT who despise our very existance and get us to do as little as possible.
But the point im making, is after you degree you'll most probably end up in a job like mine. But i got there without any degree or formal qualifications. in IT they dont want degrees of fancy bits of paper, it comes down to if you can do the job or not.
As you're from EMIS I like you, by FAR the best helpdesk for a clinical system that I've had to deal with - instant solutions pretty much. Would you believe isoft took 3 months to call me back on something? But I can honestly say I agree with you on the majority of PCT staff not having a bloody clue.
It is emis i work for, and yes

i do believe you. I used to work for Torex in their retail devision. Torex's Healthcare devision became isoft in the restructure that made Torex become Torex Retail and Torex Healthcare isoft.
