If its EMIS I hate him :p

Thats becuase people who work in Primary Care are generally NOT engineers. I didn't meet a single qualified engineer.

Haha it is emis yes.

They may not be qualified, but why do they get called engineers then ? they certainly get paid enough to be engineers, but in my experience dont know their dns server from their AD controller. If you've got a half hour i can real off some corkers ive got from PCT IT "field staff" (if thats a better word for them :p)

I could be here all day ranting about inappropriate job titles :D

PCT IT field staff... oh the fun I've had with those. Eventually they got so fed up of me logging calls for things like removing write protected icons from my desktop I ended up with the local admin password.. ;)

As you're from EMIS I like you, by FAR the best helpdesk for a clinical system that I've had to deal with - instant solutions pretty much. Would you believe isoft took 3 months to call me back on something? But I can honestly say I agree with you on the majority of PCT staff not having a bloody clue. :(

what dept did you do your placement in btw ?

if you do end up in primary care, be sure to say hi if you ring emis. Emis is a funny old company, theres 2 parts. Theres software support, lots of various depts all based out of Fullford House near Leeds Bradford airport. The requirements for software support are basically just being a bit IT savvy. As a result, most of the people you speak to dont have a clue. Its a running joke at our place how bad software support are.

I work in the other half, called Systems support. We cover everything thats not the emis software. Newham PCT in london actually pay us to run their PCT helpdesk for them, so we take care of networking / printers / desktops / printers / infrastructre etc.. basically anything other than emis application itself. Our work varies, some PCTs like barnet, like to pay us to cover everything for them. So we're a HP Compaq and Brother approved warranty repair centre. So we can cover just about anything. Then you get PCTs like wakefield PCT who despise our very existance and get us to do as little as possible.

But the point im making, is after you degree you'll most probably end up in a job like mine. But i got there without any degree or formal qualifications. in IT they dont want degrees of fancy bits of paper, it comes down to if you can do the job or not.

It is emis i work for, and yes :D i do believe you. I used to work for Torex in their retail devision. Torex's Healthcare devision became isoft in the restructure that made Torex become Torex Retail and Torex Healthcare isoft.

ah, from your direct comparison on salary i thought you'd got a placement in the IT sector. You can ignore my comment about similar jobs above then :)

MrLOL, do you know anyone called Cordell? I think that's how you say his name, black guy who kinda looks like Morpheous from Matrix :D He generally tends to come to our new sites.

he'll probably be from installations team or sales (central operations as they're known) Unfortunately, due to being in systems, im in a completely different building to the rest of the company, and completely the other side of leeds. Only people based out of our place, is my dept, the backup team, and our sister company Egton (http://www.egton.net/) so i dont get to see any of the field guys. I know a lot of the guys in software support though, as i speak to them daily.

Will Gill had one if i remember, and im sure he could show up some cars that would supprise you. Somebody dig up one of his old threads :D

Will Gill sold his after it span 360 degrees on a wet Motorway whilst travelling in a straight line.

Will Gill knows how to drive and has experience of many performance cars. Phate does not, and should instead buy a hot hatchback.

2nd that aswell, mate can drive too and already spun his.

Climb the ladder, not jump for the top rung as you'll most likely fall on your ass. ;)

Speaking of Will Gill, I haven't seen him post in ages and his last was on the 1st Feb, any idea where he's got to?

Yes, becuase short term gratification > long term success.

Don't be a pleb, you know nothing of my situation. I personally had a very bad uni experience, and I would have been much better served going into work, and the ay i'm going i'm still going to be successful, degree or not. I wasn't saying anyone else shouldn't go to uni, so stop doing the usual: "zomg i'll jump on every comment with a caustic remark". Sometimes it's just not clever or funny, just tiresome. :)
