New job further away means im doing more miles now. I'd like to spend no more then 5,500 tops to be honest. Firstly, i dont like mondeo's :p as long as it tops 40mpg on a motorway cruise and has power to overtake comfortably onback roads, id be happy. size of car and luggage/boot not an issue, previous car a vx220.. so im used to cramped spots !
any suggestions??

Cant see 40mpg being easy with a 172 tbh, possible yes, but only when driving like a saint i would think

MK4 GT TDI golf 6 speed 130BHP ,,winner . 50MPG on motorways and pulls like mad upto 125MPH .

You'll spend £5k on a 2001/2002 plate with 120k miles+ and the saving you make on fuel will go on repair bills :o

Personally, for £5k I'd be looking at a Ford Focus 1.6 which will easily do 40MPG+ and should be able to get a 53/04 plate for that sort of money :)

Edit:// Possibly the 2.0 engine might be a better option and should still assatain a decent MPG on a run whilst giving you a decent performance on the back roads :)

Skoda Fabia vRS. You should be able to pick up a 3 year old example for that. Cracking little cars. Should give you 55+ mpg.

a 172 can do 40 mpg??

with regards to a focus - whats the best spec (zetec lx etc??) and any ides on the mpg for the st170?

Fabia Vrs, looks a nice car, i have only ever seen 1 on the roads though so don't know a thing about them? are they all 5 doors ( a quick search on ebay has no 3 dr option on there?) and whats the reliablity like?

golf - so the 150bhp 6 speed can still get over 40mpg? what are they like to drive?

30 miles there, 30 miles back. I cant justify running a vx220 for that kind of distance! my old job was only 5 mile away so that was ok!

I wasn't going to tell you to keep the VX220. I think 60 miles in that would lead to numness of the rear.

I just though Fox would need some figures for his diesel Win/Fail spreadsheet.

The number of people on this forum who exaggerate their mpg is bloody ridiclous.

Clio 172 and Focus 1.6 doing over 40mpg in "real world" conditions?

Don't make me laugh.

Incidentally OP, no petrol car is going to do 40mpg+ and also comfortably overtake on backroads.

Motorbike.
They can be uncomfortable, have no boot/luggage space, will do 40+mpg when ridden gently, will overtake just about anything on a backroad and you can't get Mondeo motorbikes. :D
