Got a new gfx card 2day, took old 1 out, stuck new 1 in (forgot to uninstall software from old gfx first). Put the 4 pin molex into the slot on the new gfx card, put the power back on. Pressed the power switch and nothing happens whatsoever.

I have a trust 570W psu and my previous card is a x1600xt

I did try to put my old card back in to uninstall drivers/software and then try again but comp doesnt turn on even when I have my old card back in.

There were no sparks or anything like that when I first booted after putting new gfx in.

Help appreciated

Thanks

You've remembered to flick the switch on that's on the back of the power supply? The amount of times I forget that is unreal!

Do you get any lights on the motherboard when it's plugged in?

I have no switch on the psu - just the black plug that goes in and out of it.

The light on the mobo is not coming on at all.

Have you checked the plug fuse? Is the card seated correctly? Make sure it is fully into the PCIe slot and clipped in place.

Card is seated properly and the clip goes into place when u push it down.

I have an extension lead which all my stuff is getting powered from such as printer, router etc. I assume you mean to check the fuse on the plug that has the psu lead plug-in on?

I can see the little red thing you pull out with the fuse attatched, but how do I know if its broken/blown?

Update: I have changed the current 13 Amp fuse with another working 13 amp fuse and still no light appears on the motherboard.

When the switch is turned on and i put the black lead into the back of the psu at a particular point i hear an ever so quiet sort of spark noise, dunno whether thats just cause im pushing the lead in whilst its powered or?

have you checked that u havent disturbed the front panel conections for the power switch, i did it once took me ages to figure out why i had no power !!

UPDATE: took my psu to a m8 house which subsequently did not light the mobo LED when plugged in. Then took his psu back to my house, which lighted up my Mobos LED and actually switched on when tested.

Therefore I guess its my psu that knacked. Question: would putting a gfx that was too powerful for the psu to handle just break the psu, surely not? The psu was 570Watts and was only powering a x1950pro - surely this would not make it die?

When i told my sister I was having problems she decided to tell me that when she had turned pc on yesterday it struggled to start up and she thought it was a lose connection or something so decided to leave it at that.

So, the psu has died either because putting the gfx card in that possibly wanted too much from the psu OR some other cause which my sister may have witnessed yday.

What you think?

You are pretty lucky the PSU didn't waste the rest of your components.

They are absolute carp imo.

You would be lucky even if you got 350W out of that in real terms with an efficiency of 65%.

Get a good quality PSU. Something that actually gives you what it states.

Yea shall be looking for a new 1, shall make a seperate post cause people wont look at this 1 so much.

Anyway what do you think is more likely to have killed it, putting in a too power demanding gfx or another issue?

An X1950 Pro needs a good 450W to fire up along with other system components.

Like I said, the Trust PSU you had would be lucky to throw out 350-400W at a push.

You X1950 Pro has undoubtadly fried you're PSU :D

Damm, so should be ok if i get a better psu in?

do you have any ideas of what to get as a replacement - please add it here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17853191

Was looking at the corsair hx 520w modular. Supposed to come with a 5 year warranty but dont actually state that anywhere that I can see.

Thanks
