Should i change my car for a 330ci?

This is true, my girlfriends dad drives a W124 estate, its actually a lovely car. He's wealthy enough that he bought my girlfriend a brand new 987 boxster S for her birthday last year, so i guess they must still hold status in these crowds.

On the subject of W124's, look what i sold for virtually nothing not that long ago because i couldnt be arsed with it! :( Was ulra reliable and would have tarted up quite nicely, full cream leather etc too

Hmm interesting dilema, especially as you were a 3 series owner before. I sort of did the reverse to this and went from a 330Ci SE to a CL500. The pros and cons you mention are perfectly valid, it depends what's important to you I guess. For me the Merc's upsides outweight the downsides, most of which I'm not bothered about apart from the noticable additional running costs of the Merc. It is significantly more expensive than a 330Ci to run, but you know this already.

For the miles you do, I think the Merc is a much better car, but it seems this is being driven by running costs and if that's the case then the BMW would be fine of course. I'd be interested to know why you think the electronics are going to give up the ghost as the mileage racks up. Is it just down to your personal experience with the hassle of the suspension or are there more known problems?

Obviously i am under no impression that the 330 is anywhere near as good, but the early W220's are well documented for having electrical niggles as they age. Mine has suffered only from a window stopping working, and a dodgy fuel level sender, the sender wasnt much at £250 fitted and i fixed the window myself, but its the mere fact that this car leads me to not even bat an eyelid at a £1000+ bill to fix the airmatics that makes me think that maybe its a tad ridiculous? I am lucky in that i am earning enough to not have the odd thousand here and there make a difference, but its still completely dead money which wouldnt need to be spent on a 330.

The W220 is miles more complicated than the 126 too :(

Yeah but...Knowing your chimpy chompy habits, I'm surprised you haven't started buying 'knackered' W126s, redoing the loom on your MErcedes V12 coffee table while drinking beer then selling them on for £££££

Not a joke - you can pick up 'broken' W126's for not a lot because (as Christoff found out in that link), the wire degrades and they stop working.

Change the loom, MOT it and sell for profit.

Could make you a tidy penny.

Nice idea if i were to be at all confident about that kind of thing, but i think thats a little too deep for me and i dont think there would be anything like enough money in relation to effort there. I buy ex fleet 1 owner small cars which need nothing other than re-advertising. I'm a salesman not a mechanic :)

If your doing moon mileage on the motorway id keep the Mercedes S430, especially if its sound system is decent. If you really want a fun car buy a 2nd one?

Ive been considering a 911 carrera cabriolet for summer for a while alongside a cheap to run work car. Thats a separate entity really, would go alongside the 330 coupe. :)

well, I have been driving a 330d for the past week as my car has been off the road, did around 1k in it, IMO the e39 is much better car to relax in, its not too "bargy" and its not too sporty like an e46 I havent driven a sport model though,, you could consider a 330d, insanely fast.

Personally I would look at a 530d/i or a A6.

You could also go the other way and get a repmobile for the week and a toy for weekends.

I cant help but think that the E39 is slightly too large, its still middle ground, although that said its far from the wafty barge that the S-class is so would still probably provide that extra feedback which would be nice. The E46 preference was purely because you can get a coupe for the same money as the 5's, and IMO they look a lot nicer.

Diesel doesnt interest me at all, cant see the point in it and dont like it :)
