The Budget - Band G Tax £1000!

Don't make me laugh, one of the first things Labour did when they came to power was cancel all the road building and improvement plans.

Now 10 years on and with a truly horrendous public transport system they realise they have real problems.

They wouldn't have so much of a problem if they hadn't made motoring so cheap. It's cheaper now than it's ever been - even half the students I know have cars theses days! Back when I was a students, only some 10 years ago no one had cars.

Just what planet are you on coz it certainly aint this one, If you think motoring is cheap then you either:-

1) Dont own a car
2) Are so wealthy you don't care ( and therfore come out with brainless statements like the one quoted)
3) Are a LABOUR MP (And probably using tax payers money for your expenses).
4) Basically do not know what your talking about.

Sorry mate, i dont often agree with clv101, but if you want it to be and only do low mileage then motoring these days is ULTRA cheap.

Lets look at very basic motoring, in for example a corsa i am getting tomorrow:

Car: £250 (and will always be worth this until it dies).
Insurance: £250, for me at 22, reduce if older.
Petrol: 40MPG, assuming 5000miles per year, £600
Road tax: £110
MOT & Service: £100 (being generous)

Thats £1310 for a WHOLE year, INCLUDING buying the car which is still worth the £250! Relative to people's income nowadays thats probably as low as its ever ever been.

That all depends where you live, your income and fuel prices. For the majority motoring is not cheap, especially if you have a more expensive car as most families do ( possibly even two cars). Also just recently after the budget LABOURS allocation for transport was not so much a slice of the pie, it was more like crumbs. At the end of the day this government and the opposition to some degree treat the motorist as a cash cow and milk us for all we are worth ( to them it is easy money).

Point is that is CAN be that cheap, motoring is not expensive, unless you chose for it to be or do big miles.

OH MY LORD, MPS USING EXPENSES TO DO THEIR JOBS WHATEVER NEXT

I dont call having 10k to spend on a kitchen for a second home " MPS USING EXPENSES TO DO THEIR JOBS ". It is after all our (taxpayers) money and they should spend it accordingly and show some respect for the people who put them where they are. I, like a lot of people WORK damn hard for my money and it makes my blood boil to see the amount of tax I pay, only to see the government squander it.

Well, thread derailed, so I won't argue here. :)

As has been said previously, I can just about see the sense in these fees for new cars. They will encourage manufactures to come up with alternative engine designs, and at the end of the day if you are buying a new car, you have the choose to buy a high CO2 vehicle and pay the extra.

However, for low milage, existing car owners its just plain unfair. I cycle to work 3 times a week, walk to the shops whereever possible and use the car for about 5000 miles/year. Yet, because I chose to have a nice, relatively high performance 276g/km car, I'm going to get heavily penalised for keeping the car in the garage, not to mention the amount of money Darling has wiped off the resale value of my car overnight.

I'm sorry but motoring absolutely IS cheap. It's cheaper now than its ever been at any point in the past.

Just LOOK at some of the cars some of us younger members of the forum have. There is no way we'd have been driving these sort of cars 15 years ago, we'd have been lucky to have a rusty Metro!

As much as it hurts, Fox does have a point... anyone I ask or know never had the sort of cars i've had in the last few of years..

just ask your parents what they drove at our age

my parents drove a rusting old morris minor for their first car. My dad even had the gearbox in bits rebuilding it when it broke because he couldnt afford to take it to a garage.

Thats not because motoring is cheap its because its so easy to get finance these days ,any spotty kid with a full time job seems to be able to get a credit card ,a bank loan or walk into a showroom and get finance on a new car .Also most of them live with parents and pay next to nothing to help support them selfs so they have all their wages to waste on a flash car !
Kids use to save up and buy a car with cash hence why the cars were not so nice as these days !
Motoring has always been expensive but its not cheaper now then its ever been before in fact the complete opposite !

It's not just that - I didnt buy on finance and neither did a lot of people on here. Cars are cheaper, more reliable, easier to run and better than at any point in the past.

Because everyone has a better standing of living these days even the unemployed are rich in comparison ,they all seem to have cable or sky ,big tv's ,computers ,new cloths ,very few people are poor these days !

People stating that motoring is cheap don't seem to be quite with reality it seems.

It maybe easier to get a "nice car nowadays than say 20 years ago" because more people are living at home with there mummy and daddy saving there £££'s and not buying or renting a house. This is a deciding factor.. FACT

Motoring cheap nowadays, thats made me laugh good n proper.

some people need to stay off the Acid.

even over the last 5 years it's changed dramatically. in my first year at uni (2002), only my rich housemate had a car, and that was a grotty punto. nowdayas, practically every student seems to be car'ed up
