I have been browsing around in this section for a while looking at all the pretty images you have been posting, and it made me want to take my own

Sooo... I decided i would buy a camera and try a bit of photography and see how much i like it. I am a complete "noob" so i didn't want to buy an DSLR however i didnt think that my current "standard" Point and Shoot cam would be any good so i have ordered the Fuji Finepix S9600, Now i know its nothing special but it should help me while i learning right?

Now on with the questions... ;)

1. Should i buy a UV filter? or any other filters?? (dunno what they do :p)
2. What memory card should i get? (The S9600 takes xD and CF i think, which one is the best and what speed/make do you recommend)
3. Shall i tek my piccys in RAW format?
4. I recently bought Aperture 2, Did i make the right choice?
5. Anything you would recommend me buying? (I have a tripod)

I had lots more questions but i have forgot what they were

1)Yes, you need a UV filter and a Circular Polariser, the UV helps to protect the lens as well as bring out more detail in bright skies, the circular polariser is used by turning the filter once it is attached until reflections have dissapeared.

2)That is entirely your choice, but the general concensus is to buy 2 memory cards of say..2gb?, that way you have plenty of space and it is spread over 2 cards if something happens to one of them.

3)Not at first, jpeg only at the beginning, learning how to use RAWs is a step in itself.

4)No idea, don't have a mac to try it with. :)

5)"Understanding Exposure (Revised Edition)" by Bryan Peterson, published by Amphoto Books. typically around £15.

1. UV filter generally just for protecting the lens'. before you look into any other filters get out with the camera first and practice some.

2. an extreme III CF card can be picked up pretty cheaply nowadays so a few of them would be perfect i think a 2gb can be had for £13.49

3. If you have a knowledge of photography already and are competent with aperture/CS3 then shoot raw the possibilities are endless :D

4. No its rubbish :p

5. a bus ticket to somewhere exciting and get shooting!

I had the small brother to the s9600 and i found it a very capable camera to learn on. I didnt really use RAW then but that was cos i didnt know how to.
I have the book "understanding Exposure" and recommend it too and learnt a lot from it. It does make you want to go out and snap some pics. Make sure you get a decent bag as well One than can carry all your kit plus some space for drink etc..

Yeah i have been looking at some bag's on the bay, and that book should come on monday with my camera.

I noticed you have a flickr link in your sig.. Do you recommend this for uploading my photos to?

its just a easy way to do it for what i need. will look in proper hosting in the future but for now it will do.

My camera has arrived :p and my book came, read the first few pages and it seems pretty good. I shall have a good read of it tonight and see what i can learn.

Ordered A Sandisk Extreme IV 2GB CF and that should be here tomorrow.

Anyways I'm off to play with it now :p:p
