hi

i love watching films , but of late all new films ive watched have not been as good as i expected, i love films with a good story and something i can watch again and again.

i did not think much of i am legend and no country for old men was a bit slow going.

is there any new films out there that are worth a watch ?

cheers

I feel like the great epics dont exist anymore, Gladiator was the last one that made me go "wow". Everything else just smacks of 'check out this cgi yo!'
There are classics made but they are few and far between in this day of $ over quality.

This is what im fearing. Movies hit a peak a good while ago with the Godfather series, Shawshank Redemption etc etc, with only the rare few now that are decent like Sin City, Oldboy. Most storylines have been done already, so i hope something good will come up.

Even stuff like "Breakfast Club". Who'd have thought a film about a bunch of kids sitting in a room for a day could be that good. You don't tend to see that sort of film-making these days.

Crime thrillers seems to be one of the decent genres that have stayed good. Zodiac in particular was a brilliant film. American Gangster as well was very good. These movies are all "life like", which i think makes them good rather than the CGI'ed crap that seems to be the standard in films now.

thanks for the replys ,some films you mentioned such as-

shawshank redemtion, godfather trilogy , are films ive seen and have really enjoyed because of the story both great films that can be watched again and again.

i find new films i buy or rent i only watch one time because the story is the same old crap but with good effects, for instance i am legend was a complete copy of 28 days later which i thought was better.

i really struggle to remember the last great film i watched although ratatoulie was an enjoyable film all be it animated

Have to agree with the OP films at the moment are terrible in general.

The film makers seem to think that having a twist at the end of the movie makes up for the other 2 hours being complete crap.

Oh look how clever we are the audience will never see that coming.

The Bourne Ultimatum was the best movie I've seen this year.

Followed by the new Rambo movie, oldschool action movie with no twist whatsoever.

I think that the Bourne trilogy was superb. Batman Begins was really good, and there are a few others. Casino Royale was another one for me. Good films are still being made, but as said above, more and more films are being made with the sole intention of making money. That's made worse by the fact that makers are beginning to ruin good films with poor remakes and sequels, again, just to make money.

A few that I'm looking out for are The Dark Knight (really can't wait), Sin City 2, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Quantum of Solace. I have very high expectations for all. That being said, all of those are building on other very successful films.

There's been some great films in recent years, The Bourne Ultimatum, Armerican Gangster and The Presitge to name a few of my favourites.

True classics like Shawshank don't grow on trees and you only expect them to come around every 10 or 20 years.

It does seem that classics are few and far between, but I suppose that when you consider the amount of movies made years ago (like today), only a small portion of those are considered classics. I still think there are lots of amazing movies made, its just that you wont find them in the summer blockbuster genre (which is ironic as Jaws and Star Wars are classics, and probably started the blockbuster trend). One of my fav movies of recent times is Memento, totally blew me away - films like that keep my faith in film alive.

simple as NO..

there have been no classic movies over the last few years, not ones that I will want to watch in 20 years times. maybe casino royale that was a great film but as for looking forward to the rubbished named new film they have changed the director again, casion royale was done by the same one that did goldeneye??? why do they always do this???
I'll stop ranting..

scamartist your bang on twists defo do not make a movie, if the movie never has anything happening though I don't agree with you about borne, wanted to turn it off after 20 mins as nothing happened! exotic location do not impress me dispite the amount of times you pan across the FBI head quaters

I don't think good films are a thing of the past entirely but with so many films out there the area for creating groundbreaking films has got smaller, simple weight of numbers if nothing else, it is difficult to do something original and unique that hasn't been done before in one way or another.

yeah the departed is a very good film. I felt almost inclined to mention 300 too, but I'm not sure that is in the same class. Sure it is unique, but I don't think of it as great if you compare it to the likes of gladiator.

The only recent film that I have enjoyed was The prestige.
Before this I enjoyed Million Dollar Baby a few years ago as well.
Not sure if I would watch any of them twice though.

In fact, I think the only films that I have chosen to watch multiple times are
1. pulp fiction
2. leon
3. Shawshank redemption
4. terminator 1/2
