9800GX2 Tweaktown benched

Disappointing with the exception of the UT3 benchies under XP.... 35% faster than the X2 and more than double the speed of the 8800GT OC.
Still, I'd still rather wait for the NDA to lift as some of those scores are a bit dodgy (example: the X2 runs UT3 much faster at 1920x1200 than 1600x1200 under Vista... )

Hm seems to perform better in xp than vista once again proving ati's drivers under vista seem to work much better. Really it didn't do much damage at all imo, for 2 more powerful cores being used (and a more expensive card) it just never really seemed to drive that advantage home much.

I'll wait and see how it performs in the otehr reviews on launch day.

I'm sure some of you have already seen it. But I want to warn you guys that the drivers used in this review simply enabled the card. And have recieved zero testing. They werent designed for use with the card in question and problems setting Multi GPU configuration amongst other things. They were made in very early january and are completely out dated and multi GPU wont even enable on the Vista set.

Take this information as is and consider it when your look at this article.

The plot thickens

This bricks meant to be released on st paddys day isn't it?

Still, them saying its 35% faster in ONE GAME (UT3) does not justify its predicted cost of £450+ compared to the sub £250 of the 3870X2 come launch time.

Looks like I will be buying my first ATI card since the 9800xt then. 3870x2 here I come as it would be much cheaper than this.

I also think we should wait till the card has actually been announced by Nvidia and decent drivers are available come launch day.

So what has the nvidia driver team been doing then?

They make it sound as if they were given the card to write a new .inf for a few minutes before it had to be sent off to be reviewed.

High end 9 series looks to be a total failure, 9600gt is a great midrange card but it's still quite costly and is in essence recycled and rehashed g80 tech.

No big surprises really, the current driver's are probably hitting performance
But then ATi's X2 isn't really in any different at the moment

However the tests show what a complete shambles nvidia's releases are under vista are even with a powerhouse of a card like that, the main reason i went to a x2

What will be funny is seeing all the nvidia fans who were complaining about the X2 drivers when it was released try and defend the card :p

Until the card is properly released how can people say Nvidia has failed, even if the 9800GTX & 9800GX2 are poor its not the end of the world, I can remember on these forums lots of people saying how ATI wont last after the release of the 2900 cards and the next thing they are the best thing since sliced bread with the 3870X2. Nvidia are about making money and the fact is lots and lots of people will still buy the cards even if its no better than the 8800GTX/8800GTS or even the GT. Personally I dont care if its old tech or not if it is faster than my 8800GTX then i will get one as getting another GTX means a new motherboard for SLi. :)

This is all good for AMD... the question though is did NV release a re-hash simply because there was no competition worthy of releasing their big guns (presuming they already have a next-gen architecture developed), or was it designed to give AMD a bit of a reprieve to get their **** in order and bring back competitiveness to the GPU market? Think about it, if NV HAD of released a true next-gen GPU with something approaching 2x the power of an 8800GTX (which would be in line with previous architectural performance differences) it would have effectively meant the end of AMD... they would have had nothing to counter it, nothing to come close, and imo it would have meant their demise in the high-end GPU market.

That above is pure speculation and may well be rubbish, but I just can't see Nvidia taking 1.5 years to design an architecture that is essentially a minor tweaking of existing tech... historically they have always had something huge in the pipeline and it has signalled a major change in performance and architecture (or at least architecture, lol). This seems like a complete cop-out. Either way I hope that R7XX is a monster.

Great, you upgrade cards for tiny performance increases and a great cost outlay, we are very happy for you. No-one says Nvidia are going to go out of business, just that the new 9800 series are a complete dissappointment as they add nothing new from an arbhitectural or performance perspective. You must understand that concept, right?
