Smoking stupidity gone too far?

While I'd agree the idea is stupid (and that is me being polite) can we not blame it on PC please? It isn't about political correctness, it is an anti-smoking group with an (obvious) axe to grind.

Who's next to picked on drinkers?

Yes.

"What do people enjoy? smoking, drinking and going out for drives (not in succession) TAX IT!!"

Smoking should be over 18s though, but how would people make an opinion on something if they're never shown anything about it when they're young. It should be a case of education when they're young on how bad it is, not hide it from them.

Dumbest. Idea. Ever. This is pretty much tantamount to banning any TV programme/film made before 1980 to the under 18's.

What would be funny is if the BBFC were to have a sense of humour and digitally replaced any cigarettes with carrots or sticks of celery just to emphasise the ridiculousness of this.

Madness.. The more they hide it. The more 15 yr old kids will want to be cool and do it imo.

Indeed, what would be slightly more effective (but still totally stupid) would be if they were to legislate that all people smoking in newly created films must be portrayed as complete losers.
Though with the welfare state we've got at the moment.. The kids might still find that something to aspire to :p

You're reacting like daily mail readers.

There's nothing on their website (that I can see) about this, so my guess is this just an off-hand comment by someone which the bbc have blown out of all proportion.

There was someone on bbc news 24 being interviewed about it. When she said "1600 children in Liverpool said they only started smoking because they saw it at the movies", I switched off.

While I do think the smoking ban is a good idea - this is not. What I also don't agree with is how they go all-out Nazi-style on smoking, but drinking is left relatively alone.

Smoking in movies is one of my pet hates especially when its done by people who don't smoke.
Its the one thing I pick up on straightaway :
You see an actor/actress with a fag on, they move it towards their mouth, camera switches angles, goes back to original actor who is now putting their smoking hand down.
Its so obvious that they are pretending to smoke so that the film makers are paid by the sponsors.

Agreed, not fair at all. Quility films/programs from that kind of era that under 18's "wouldn't" be able to watch. Infact smoking is almost paramount to setting the tone and the atmosphere in some older cop shows etc and it would be totally unfair to brandish them which are not 18's already to 18. Very silly and unfair.

Not that I necesaraly have any amazing idea to prevent it I personally reckon (and I'm sure many would agree) its school that sets of a lot of people smoking at a young age.

In fact I know I, personally, provoked many people at my school into smoking, and smoking more due to the fact the younger years felt as though they fitted in a bit more if they came out and had a fag with me and the lads. Otherwise we would never have known them and they may have felt insecure.
