advice for going to london

I love just mooching around Leicester square and that area at night, when I lived in London I was practically nocturnal at weekends.

Start off in Canary Wharf. It's brilliant! Skyscrapers, shopping, nice bars, great scenery. After that, take the DLR from Canary Wharf station to Cutty Sark. Go to Maritime Greenwhich and visit the Cutty Sark. Take in the immense architecture. From there, pop to Hackney and visit the local historic sites. **WARNING**WARNING** When/If you go to Hackney, stay away from Hommerton. Stay around Shoreditch.
Take a rivercruise along the Thames. Climb the Monument. Go to Neasden and visit the Neasden temple. Go to South London and visit Crystal Palace. Go Noth London and visit Alexander Palace. Egg 10 Downing Street. Visit the World War 2 Cabinet War Rooms. Go to the toy museum and play with toys. Go SOHO and grab yourself a prostitute. Get a meal from Chinatown. Go Camden. Watch a show at a theatre. Visit the wax works. Go to the Absolut Ice Bar. Have a pint at the Blind Beggar Pub in Mile End. Visit the flag ship London Tesco store at Galleons Reach. Really, people who claim London is boring clearly haven't taken in it's full potential.

Some guy said (along the lines of) "If you are bored of London, you are bored of life"

No, don't go there, it's very expensive these days.

According to The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, when a popular magazine published an article stating in part, "When you're tired of Ursa Minor Beta, you're tired of life!" the suicide rate there quadrupled overnight.

Stayed there a few times. Nice hotel.

does seem it but unfortunately a little over my price range (though not too bad) and they havne't got any rooms for tjhis friday.

thanks for the tips guys, still looking on the billion of websites for hotels as i can't seem to find exactly what i am looking but for things to do you have definately sorted that one out.

edit

love it, just asked the gf and she is like well seems ok, not really bothered tbh :( yay just the response i was looking for

That's the only problem with London and bars, a lot of the nice ones are off side streets and unless you know where to find them they can elude you! Although there are a few nice wine bars in Covent Garden, they're just away from the main market.

Although if I was specifically looking for smart upmarket bars I'd look around Piccadilly/Mayfair/off Bond Street if you're smack bang in the middle, High Street Kensington if you're over in the South West. For trendy bars I'd go to Upper Street in Islington.

As far as I've found there is a night that suits everyone, you just have to be in the right area. You wouldn't go to Shordich if you were looking for a smart area where everyone gets dressed up!

If you wanna go see a freak show then go to Camden Town tube station after dark and simply wonder round that general area and you'll be spoilt for choice with said freakshow that is Camden Town at night.

so true

there are far too many people where you really have to resist the urge to say "erm so what have you come as?" :D

Camden Town tube at night? It's all black people offering drugs :p.
Camden during the day is when all the freaks are out, Used to love going out then, some interesting looking ladies :p lol.

what we found round covent square were "traditional" London pubs which really are not my thing, I prefer the smart Lounge type of place, of course that is just personal preference and it may well suit others

Also found it odd that folks didn't seem to bother getting dressed up on a weekend night

there are a few smart bars round convent garden - Detroit for instance - though not really in the main square - (gardening club isn't too bad some nights though) bear in mind it is an old-ish area & full of tourists so plenty of traditional pubs

I prefer the fact that you don't have to have a collar/shoes to go out in london - used to really irritates me going out in my home town or in some other citys where bouncers would insist on shirt & shoes (some even had a no denim policy in the past) - basically everyone ends up looking the same in black trousers + shirt - mmm welcome to the early 90s

I don't understand the reasoning behind it as it looks crap and isn't going to keep out undesirables as plenty of chavs seem to lose the tracksuit and get dressed up like that on a Friday/Saturday
