hey :)

are there any beat em ups really worth getting on the ps3 or is that online tekken the only real offering at the mo?

basically i'm just after a really good two player game, and my choices would have been tennis or fighting... since virtua tennis is the only offering and i'm not that keen i'm gonna look at a beat-em-up, unless someone can recommend another great 2 player? the kinda a game that is perfect for a couple of guys with a couple of beers ;)

tekken is the best beat em up out for the ps3 right now. Your only other option is like virtua fighter. All the good beat em ups will be coming out throughout the year though, we got tekken 6, soul calibur 4, street fighter 4 and street fighter hd to look forward to :D

i think theres a new tennis game thats just come out, sega smash tennis or something? i havent looked into it though so know nothing about it. maybe look at stuff like fifa, fight night, those sort of things go down pretty well, or guitar hero

splitscreen fps or racing perhaps? i think cod4 offers splitscreen multiplayer, and gt prologue will do splitscreen racing

To be honest, this gen so far, there have been no "good" beat em-ups (exluding SF2:HF on XBLA which is a pefect port, only let down by laggy netcode). DOA4 is rubbish(360). Virtua Fighter 5 is better (360/ps3), but still not as good as anything last gen (and does not require a lot of skill at all tbh if you are a seasoned Beat em up player it is quite easy, and dare I say basic due to the 3 action button layout). Me and a mate played a lot of VF5 (offline only as ps3 version is not online). And tbh it pales in comparison to Tekken 5 and the SF2 games (I have SF Alpha Anthology which we play using Backwards Compatability on the 60GB ps3). The graphics are very slick, but the gameplay isn't there for me.

Sadly, the next decent beat em up to come out will be SF2 HD remix (a remake of a 10yr old + game :) ). SF4 is gonna be ages, as will Tekken 6, no doubt. Soul Calibur 4 could be good (I played a little bit of it yesterday at this show thing, but they only had 3 characters to select, and I didn't remember any of them!!). Namco are usually decent for good console beat em ups, But as they like to introduce new characters and have "special" characters, the real test will be how balanced the game stays (Also for some reason I tend to like weapon based beat em ups like this and say Toshinden, a bit less).

its got to be tekken 5 at the moment, at the moment there are 3 proper fighting games worth looking it

Street fighter, Tekken and soul calibre. I only like these the rest are rubbish compered to them

I'd disagree rp2000. Virtua Fighter is one series where seasoned players will NEVER be beaten by a rookie button-basher. I couldn't say the same for Tekken.

Yeah right. Any beat em up in the last 10 yeas has been prone to that. There is always at least one or 2 unbalanced characters in each series that can be button mashed for a round or two, then the seasoned player will adapt. And you say the whole series is not affected by this? I have played VF2 to 4 in the arcades and on consoles and they all suffer from this. TBH the most consistently balanced game has always been SF2 (although to be fair they have had so many revisions to get it right!!).

Are you a seasoned VF player or just repeating something you have read? I know you don't like Tekken, but to be fair you have not even played it online, so I doubt you are in a decent position to criticise. (Unless you have got the game recently in which case I will gladly prove to you that button bashers (you :)) will not beat a seasoned player (me:) )!!

I have played 4 VF games, so I'm in a decent position to comment on that. The only Tekken game I've not played is Tekken 4, so again, I'm in a decent position to comment there. I've played all Soul Caliburs and a lot of Street Fighters (couldn't tell you the full count :p).

I may not have played Tekken to the same level as you, but after playing Tekken 5: DR on PS3 arcade, I'm in no rush to buy the online addition to it.

Of all those I've played, I'd say Virtua Fighter is the least repetative and most balanced.

Obviously I am not saying my views are worth more as I have played more (that would be silly). But I don;t know how you can criticise a game where you have predominantly played in a 1 player mode against the CPU and not played online (or in arcades I assume) against decent players.

But each to their own. (I wasn't questioning which games you have played, but more the level of competition, you have played, if you see what I mean). A lot of people have only played beat em ups at home with their mates on consoles or in 1P mode so I don't think are in a position to compare to poeple who play against a more varied set of opponents (tournaments, Arcades, online etc).

Before VF5 came out I guess there was only really a choice for Tekken 5 on ps3 and DOA4 and SF2 HF on 360 (this gen). I dare not ask, but what was you preference on the consoles above prior to VF5 coming out ? ;)

I never said I didn't play in Arcades, or that my games were predominantly against the CPU...

Having that I own all of them, I'd probably say DOA4, but none of them have really done it for me, which is a shame.

its the same for tekken

the high end game is extremely technical, not that im anywhere near that stage. A seasoned tekken player will destroy any button masher.

Two Words: Eddy Gordo.

Worst addition to a fighting game. Ever.

You are confused, he was balanced in version 4 of the game. Now you have to watch out for Lili in version 5 :) She is the new Eddy, although actually I am used to beating her now as a lot of people online try to play as her!!

I would reccomend it for 2 player and online is sweet if a mate has it :D:D:D

really good game if you call it a beat 'em up

Yehh Fight Night is amazing. I think it was the first proper next gen title that I enjoyed. Although it also has the honour of killing my first 360 :)
