I'm upgrading from my less than great 'Joytech AV swtcher into £40 Logitech speakers' set up to something a little better.

Cambridge Audio 540R v3 (silver) - £300

Mordaunt Short 902i (Maple) - £120ish

Pioneer DV400 (silver) - £70

Cheap speaker cable and cheap interconnects.

Space is a big limiting factor for me, I simply can't fit surrounds in (small bedroom setup) but I don't intend to buy an amp again for quite some time. So I will be having just the bookshelves for now, maybe a sub sometime in the future. Some of you will suggest getting a stereo amp for less money, but I think I will end up regretting it.

I've done my homework and I don't think that I will have many complaints but I always like to check.

When will you be going 5.1?

I've got the original CA 540r and it really is an excellent receiver for the cash, being especially good at reproducing stereo. for music.

If you are planning to go stereo for the moment and at more speakers later then it's a great starting point.

I can't comment on the other items as I've not heard them, and more importantly I've not head them together.

By the way, I know that for another £100 I could go for an Onkyo 605; but its just to ugly. The CA isn't perfect...but I can't afford the Arcam DiVA AVR28

The 540R is way above the 605 in music reproduction and on par for AV. If you don't need the HD sound formats over HDMI then you are making a wise choice.

As for the 902i's... they can be had for £95 if you do a quick search on google. RS might even price "beat" for you. For the money they 902's are great speakers. I have some 302's and some 916i's and love the sound :)

EDIT: In terms of speaker cable... Belden 5000UP (search and 3rd link down it is a cable company). £1.75/m or so and extremely good quality. As good as far more expensive cable. Interconnect wise.... cheap is fine but look s/h for some slightly higher quality stuff at the same price.
