Minedoesn't have the lever..

I generally try and pull up and down the tray-drop-thing(which turns on the toaster and drops the bread in), to throw the crumpets out of the top

I have a similar toaster, and even with the lever, its hard to pick crumpets and waffles out. Thats why I just stick a fork in the side of them instead of bothering with the lever.
