New Parts

Hi guys,

Sorted the problem with my HD3850 - turned out to be the CPU so currently running on the single core CPU from my kids PC ( which happens to have a blown Mobo ).

Therefore towards the end of april I am going to be buying new parts. I'm a little out of the loop but was thinking :-

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ Black Edition 2.60GHz (Socket AM2)
Asus M2R32-MVP Crossfire (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

and probably a cooler ( or can I re-use my current 939 cooler? - it's a decent one who's name escapes me right now - big multi heatpipe jobbie with side mounted fan).

I know Intel is the leader in CPU's right now but I have a limited budget and anythings going to be better than my old 3800 X2.

you could get the ocuk IP35 pro and e2160 with the same ram kit for less (assuming OCUK prices), then overclock the CPU to 3GHZ.

alternatively if you can ,you could start at a higher stock speed and have a higher multipler by getting a more expensive CPU.

the Black AMD chips are multiplier unlocked though aren't they? So in theory should get a solid OC out of them?

they are, but intel chips are faster at the same clock speeds i think.

we need more opinions here i think

Indeed, just not sure if at the lower price levels (which I am at for this) which is better.

I admit I do prefer AMD purely umm cos I do - lol - but don't know how they compare overclocking wise, espeically with the black AMD chips.

+1 for Intel

At the moment Intel is just the better choice. Having a E2160 myself I can say they are great chips and you will love them if you are going to overclock

. These chips hit 3Ghz easily combined with a P35 chipset motherboard and a good case / good cooling! I'd get rid of that AMD stuff
