Cannon 400D or the GX10??

I dont know which, i was reccommended the GX10 today and as ive staretd to save up around £400 i dont know which i should get.

The consensus will be that you should either get the Canon or abandon both and get a Nikon. These two brands are the best established in the field, so have the greatest number of products available - lenses, flashes, batteries, whatever - and if you're interested in taking it any further in the future then they also have the best 'upgradability' without you having to change manufacturer and / or equipment such as lenses.

I suppose thats about all i need to know :)

Ive seen them drop as low as £395 in shops now... So i think that will be the best bet.

Canon 400D body and 18-55mm IS lens cost you proberly £50 more but it well worth it over the standard kit lens.

doesn't mean that there aren't other valid systems though (as an anaology not everybody drives a Toyota or GM brand car even though they are the 2 largest car manufacturers).
They all take good pictures & usually have their own particular pros & cons but 1 of the most important is to see how they handle for you - are they unnatural or comfortable - so get to a shop & try them.

No, I totally agree. How the camera feels in your hands is extremely important. More recently, even the argument about there being more lenses isn't really true. I was simply pointing out what the majority view is.

However, the point about both of these ranges having better upgradability is valid, I think. Within the Canon range, you can go from xxxD to xxD to xD, for example - something you couldn't really do within Samsung, taking this example.

Specifically with the GX10, I get the feeling that it is somehow a cross between a dSLR and a bridge in some ways. The fact that there is a button for RAW, for example I don't think is convenient but odd to have on a dSLR and would indicate that it's not necessarily aimed at people who would be using it to it's full potential by using RAW.

The Samsung of course is really a Pentax in disguise so there is now the K20D/GX20 but yes, atm there are fewer upgrade options for the Pentax mount - no doubt they will bring out a FF body though too in the future to join Canon, Nikon & Sony.

I love the look of the GX10 but i refused to touch it as i have the 400D set in mind and its taking a lot longer than expected to save so i dont want to change my mind..

If it is a lot better then yes i may consider it but its a big 'if'.

400D is the better option i think..

Second hand? Why?? Second hand is around £300 and brand new can be found for £380..

Its my first camera i dont ever want anything to go wrong with it, not atleast for the 1st 6-12 months.

I may aswell just folk out the extra £80 for the brand new one.

I think the 400D can be had quite easily for £400 on the high street, less online, then you can get the £40/45 (I forget which) rebate from Canon's current offer, meaning at most it would end up costing you £360 for a 400D + 18-55mm kit off the high-street.

Rebate offer? Please advise.

Nice one, cheers dude.

If ebay had one for sale would i still be able to get the rebate?

Does it have to be a retailer?

I think if you bought it new from certain stores on there, you might be able to. But I wouldn't expect you to be able to get the cashback if you bought it used or refurbished.

Try looking for the seller Kerso, I've heard good things about him and also that the previous rebate offers have come through for people purchasing from him.
