Im torn between the above 2.

ST 220

+points

1) That noise !
2) Powah !!!
3) Speed !!
4) more toys

- points

1) the road tax :(
2) the mpg
3) the insurance

ST TDCI is lower insurance group, trounces it for mpg, can be remapped to 180 ish up from the 155 as stock. So its slower, doesnt sound sexual, but is economically much more sensible

But then to make it even worse, the ST220 gets more toys. Full leathers as opposed to half, electronic boot release etc...

Especially given the fact im comming from a 90bhp snooze mobile MPV. Im not sure ill need the speed / power of the ST220. Decisions :S

Presumeably the torque of the mapped diesel would be more than the unmapped petrol?

Are you really sure you want one? A few passed me over the weekend (up by you as it goes in Pontefract) and apart from the colour they make absolutely no impression.

do you do enough miles to justify the diesel? the diesel will be considerably more to buy which would balance it off against the poor MPG.

Unless you're doing 20k plus a year, i'd defo go for the 220.

for 10k, im looking at old shape 2005 ish Octavia VRS, 2001 ish Audi A4s with high mileage, or old shape vectras

all are considerably worse than the mondeo. Old vectra is horrible to drive, Skoda is just as bland, and the Audis are much higher mileage being older and the interior feels older too. No other rapid saloons that are worth looking at for the money. Apart from the 2.4 VTEC accord which is 180bhp. But thats even more dull still.

Other alterntiaves are the rally kinds, evo and impreza. But they're just out of my leage in running costs at the minute.

To drive or to look at?

I've always thought the Type-S looks alright, certainly no worse than the ST220 imo.

to look at. If edd think the ST220 is bland, the Accord Type S suffers from the problem just as much

plus it cant go up hills being a VTEC ;)

Whats the tax brackets for the two mondeos? I have to say, I like that interior shot of the silver one (although defo not silver!)

Does it have to be so new?

Only ask because I'm just not prepared to play this silly game with the government. Fuel I can control by useage but I won't be bent over for £400 of tax.

I can't imagine the running costs of the petrol mondeo being less than an old style Impreza including - purchase costs/insurance/tax and maybe even fuel. Resale of each well the old style Imprezas in great condition are about to start going up in price.

Sorry for the fanboi opinions.

I love being up your way. Lots of import centres, lots of tat to pretend you want to buy :) great way to waste a Monday :D

Ins group is 13 compared 16
MPG is 46 quoted vs 27 quoted

and Car Tax is £175 vs £ 440. All in all, the saving must be about £500 / year for car tax & insurance.

Does an ST220 need 97 RON ? if it needs that the diesel may be especially cheaper. If its 95 RON the increased MPG of diesel would be lessened by the decreased cost of petrol

i honestly dont know which to choose :S

220, you know it makes sense, if you dont do mega miles its the far better choice, better engine better spec, may cost more to run but its definitely worth it. I didnt bother testing a TDCI as I just dont like diesels and dont do the miles to warrant one. Also the 220s are more reliable, with the tdci known to have injector/turbo problems.

Quoted MPG means bugger all tbh.

If you do a low mileage, then consider the 220, but, given the savings to be had with regard to tax, insurance & fuel with the TDCI , I think you'd be daft to do so.

Sexual engine notes matter little when you on 1'st name terms with the petrol station cashier imo - I've been there!

the st220 doesnt need 97 ron :) It's a very good engine, plenty moddable for an N/A lump, IIRC wayn0r's made about 260bhp with VERY few mods (remap and catback?)

260bhp through the front wheels

eep !

I find mine has very good grip levels running on michelin sports, certainly doesnt wheelspin all over the show unless you absolutely hammer it off the line. However my yoko's which i have just put on the front are terrible so i've just ordered some eagle f1's to replace them, will hopefully sort that out.

You'll get a 220 for less than that.....

At the difference of £500 I'd go for the diesel. The £500 you save in the first year will go towards getting it mapped and it should end up with more torque than the petrol.

Only takes one un-normal trip to show you the difference diesel makes. From west wales to yorkshire, my wifes old car (1.4 petrol) would use 3/4 of a tank. Her Leon TDI does the same distance using just under half a tank. Over the course of a weekend visiting her folks the difference using todays fuel prices is near about £75.

had we taken my Jeep its £70 to fill it up (2 tanks there, 1 tank driving round and 2 tanks coming back) ouch!
