Anyone taken Roacutane before? Or know a little about it?

Hey, this isn't a request for advice, just peoples experiences whilst taking this drug!

I've just had my doctor refer me to a dermatologist, which I decided not to do about 5 or 6 months ago. Which I'm kicking myself about because I'd have finished the treatment by now if I did!

What experiences did people have when using Roaccutane, or how friends / relatives reacted to using it?

I'll probably be taking this in a couple weeks time.

A friend of mine was on it whilst we were at university. It did the job and didn't prevent him from living a 'proper' student lifestyle, if you know what I mean ;)

my mate was using it back in 6th form and it gave him some of the most painful looking cracked dryed lips ive ever seen for the whole time he was using it

it aint that bad, it hardly warrants alarm, its no worse than having a bad cold and chaffing you nose from blowing it too much. Just use some kind of vaseline or lip salve.

I still have bad dry skin now if I don't mosturise each day :( and i took it last almost 4 5 years ago.

The worst part for me was the muscular aches and pains while doing sport, and ended up losing my place in various football teams due to never quite beig able to get fit even 3 months after pre season and have only returned to playing for a team properly since Christmas.

I was on it for 6 months about 4 years ago. The dry skin was the worst problem and my face is still slightly dryer than it was before I went on it.

Still, I don't regret a minute of it and would recommend it to anyone with severe acne.

*EDIT* - Forgot about the muscle pains and feeling lethargic after doing sport, also had that too.

My ex used to use it. It didn't work, but there were no side effects (other than her being a bit of a tard {but I think that started before the Roaccutane})

I was on it for 9 months. Bloody awful stuff but works so well.

Some people get really depressed when taking it and some have committed suicide (wtf?) It's a really powerful drug.

Your not supposed to drink alcohol while on it and you need regular blood tests.

I didn't get too many side effects, just extremely dry lips (get some Blistex) and occasional headaches. Although it's made my cholesterol go up really high which hasn't come down yet.

They might not put you on it, but probably will. The dermatologist said to me that it's not abut how many spots you have, it's trying to prevent scarring.

This was the reason I wasn't put on it for the first 3 months under the dermatologist as I was depressed about looking terrible and having painful spots/boils all over the damn place!

I honestly felt better on the Roaccutane when I started to see positive effects and the acne going away. I have no idea what the studies are like, but leaving people with severe acne is more likely to end in suicide than giving them a chance and putting them on it in my eyes.

I've come off it recently, finished my course. It's worked wonders, and almost as soon as I stopped taking it the dryness went away. While I was on it during the last 4 months I had to moisturise my face and my forearms (i got sunburnt while on it and the effect was worsened :(, be VERY careful of sun!!).
The lips were torture, ridiculously dry. Had to use vaseline stuff every 10mins or so.

I dont regret a second, its radically changed me for the better :) I look at pics of myself with spots and wonder why I didnt do this much sooner.

The spots were gone after the first 3 months, had to stay on for 2 more to make sure they dont come back.

Some of these replies seem fairly positive, I find it hard to see how you'd become depressed, unless you let the dry skin get to you! But thats more easily hidden than acne!

Another thing to think about aswell is that your hair can thin and be more prone to breakage and even just coming out of the roots while on it. So if you have long hair that might be somehting to think about, I had short hair when I was on it, but a friend who had longer hair had really problems with more than usual amounts coming out when washing his hair.

Yet another side effect that I forgot about. My hair is a lot thinner now and has never really recovered, still very brittle.

Seems I got more side effects than I first remembered. :D

I was on it for a while, did the job, but prepare to shed your lips like a snake sheds it's skin.
