Is the new nForce 790i Ultra SLI worth £240.86 inc VAT ??

It still blows just like the 680i, 780i, Hmm i'm seeing a patton forming :p

Got anything to back this statement up? I wouldn't judge a board that isn't released on my bad experiences.... these boards have had wolfdales to 615fsb...

not really, but it depends if you think DDR3 is justified as thats the only real difference from the 780i's.

They are nothing like the 680i and 780i (which are, in essence, the same thing) this is a completely new chipset, with the pci-e 2.0 built into it, no daughter chip...

The top benchmarkers are using these and sli'd 88gts 512's to achieve some stupidly high scores... infact, 30k with 1 gx2 on a 790i...

Fact is, 680i generally wasn't too good, with a lot of people having bad experiences, but there were some good ones out there. Biggest mistake 680i owners made was not reading up on the 780i, and the fact that it's the same board with a daugher chip on the nortbridge, and thus, carried the same problems...

As for whether it's worth the price tag? doubtfull.. i certainly wouldn't pay that (although i actually already have.. but cancelled :D)

Thanks viper......Do you think the price will drop in a few weeks time ???

Judging from past experience with the 680i and 780i price, yes, but don't expect it to drop much...

My 680i was 2nd hand, i payed £140 when they were still near £200 new.

Think i'm going to wait to make sure of the clocking potential of the 790i before i go ahead and commit myself... not too bothered on the price of the board, it's just the extra price tag of DDR3 that's putting me off a bit, going to have to spend near the same price of the board purely on 4gig DDR3...

Hmm so nvidia is claiming support for 2000 fsb already, sounds a lot like the 680's when they where guaranteed to do 1333 and then it turned out that some didnt do it.

I think Nvidia's chipset isn't really pushing the boat anymore i mean back in the day of nforce 2 etc it was so much better than anything else but these days Intel is much better even for the high performing overclocking parts.

Only reason to by Nvidia these days is if you are gonna do SLi but even at that you still ahve to pay a high price for it....imho to high.

Yeh wolfdale chips they still have problems with quad core chips, Which most people now use.

Its remarkable easy to sucide bench and get uber scores, It says nothing for the long term stability of a board, TBH i think people would enjoy that much more than a board that blue screen ever 30 minutes.

It may be a new chipset but we all know that X48 and P45 will be more stable, clock better and give much more peformance.

Going by the few reviews that I've read so far 790i looks much improved compared to 680i/780i.
Is it worth that kind of money?
Not to me especially when you need to add the cost of DDR3 but no doubt some people will pay it.

Yeah it seemingly hits EXTREME FSB with the 45nm quads, which is of course what everyone wants. The problem is when a motherboard costs more than what most would consider a near top end consumer grade CPU, cost:sense ratios get tested to the extreme.

Look at it this way, Your paying £240 for a board with a now dead socket. It needs DDR3 which will cost you another few hunder quid, Then when Nehalem hit at the end of the year and everyone upgrades you'll be left wth low end DDR3 thats worth next to nothing. Would be much better sticking to DDR2 boards untill DDR3 becomes more mainstream, Drops in price, gains highter speed and tighter timings. Then maybe Nvidia will allow Intel to make proper SLI boards :p

personally i can't justify spending over £100 on a motherboard, £100 on ram, £150 on cpu, £180 on gfx

:)
