Anyone know what sort of power decrease you get when running a 98ron mapped turbo car on 95ron? I remember somneone saying EVO had done a test or one of the magazines anyway. Anyone got any info or links?

Thanks.

If you run a car mapped to 98ron on 95ron, not only will you lose power, but you will easily risk det which can damage the engine. If your car is mapped specifically to something, then stick to it! Obviously using a higher ron than it is mapped to will not cause damage, but it will not really increase power either.

I do appreciate it would cause det and the ECU would retard the ignition. Iwould only ever run 98/99ron in my T4 when I had it. I was wondering what the actual difference in power would be and if there was any documented evidence.

Well that isn't something that someone is going to document really is it. Why would someone take a mapped to 98ron car, and then run it on 95ron to see the power loss? They'd be more concerned about melting something than the power! The ECU if mapped specifically to 98ron could only retard the ignition so much, and I doubt that it would handle wide open throttle and full boost, it would just det all over the shop. Not something worth considering mate.
Consider maybe the difference between a mapped to 95ron car, and a mapped to 98ron car? But then you've got to consider the car, the spec etc. Lets put it this way though, when prodrive used to put piggy bank ECU chips on the bugeyed scooby, they'd quote 245bhp for 98ron, and 230bhp for 95ron, but that's a very low level of tune.

OK cheers. I thought EVO did a test with super unleaded against 95ron, some one must have done it and written about the power/mpg difference. The prodrive one is a good indication though. As i said its not that would do it im just curious of the difference in power.

Yes they did do a test or someone did, but by you saying a mapped car opens up a whole different discussion to the EVO test. As they were running standard unmapped cars, thus having all the tolerances of a generic map. A remapped car (by remapped I always think custom mapped) will have those tolerances ironed out to get the best performance using the fuel in the tank, by lowering the ron of that fuel would go against the mapping and cause det as said :)
