well she told me 4 people in her class got this book to do over the last day or 2, .. the chosen ones lol, shes never done anything like this in class before

coming to think of it i hadnt, and i have A-level maths under my belt :o

It does suck rather if thats the case, perhaps its somthing from the great book of Nintendo Brain Train then???:D

It is badly written, presented and possibly designed to be a test of logic / problem solving more than an all out maths question.

If there are 196 legs and 126 eyes at the dog show.
How many people and how many dogs are present?

All the people and all the dogs at the show have the
normal number of eyes and legs

How would one attempt this, set up two linear equations and then solve simultaneously?

seems like a bit of a pointless question tbh...

I can't see what it would teach them other than wasting their time trying different solutions until one fits.

I don't think it is that hard for an 8 year old provided that they understand the question/how to go about finding a solution.

how did you figure its an subtraction at the beginning? :S

1 number above the other with the area underneath for the answer. It's how I was taught at school

Edit: I just realised it could be any other calculation (addition etc), but I like my answer so I'll stick by it :)

that sounds good but do we just assume its ok to use -,
also whats the Z in the top corner for

(hey did you set the questions by any chance lol)
