McCanns going too far?

Of course you are, but free speech has never extended to libel and slander. The papers have admitted they were wrong to accuse the McCann's of killing Maddy - I just think if you made similar accusations here the right thing to do is admit you were wrong also.

Nothing as been stated as fact (as of yet), so nothing is libel or slander. So until it can be proven the McCanns have got something to do with the disappearance of Maddy, the papers cannot be done for libel and slander, they are only stating their views, which they do all the while. It's only because the McCanns have got so much publicity that they got the papers to issue an apology.

If on the other hand it can be proven the McCanns haven't got anything to do with the disappearance, then yes the papers should issue an apology because it is libel and slander.

I just think if you made similar accusations here the right thing to do is admit you were wrong also.

If it can be proven that the McCanns have not got anything to do with the disappearance, then I will apologise, but until then I will stand by what I believe.

But it doesn't mean what they said isn't true, they just can't prove it.

It is a good job the McCann's didn't have to counter prove they didn't have anything to do with her going missing.

Ever hear of innocent until proven guilty? If there's no proof they did it then they didn't do it and you can't go around saying they did - as Express Group Newspapers have just found out.

You're behaving as if this was a court judgement. It wasn't, it's meaningless.

I must be reading a completely different story to some of you in here :

They say they were wrong to suggest the couple, of Rothley, Leicestershire, were responsible for Madeleine's death.

In a statement read out on behalf of the McCanns at the High Court on Wednesday, they said they were pleased that Express Newspapers had admitted the "utter falsity" of the numerous stories written about them over many months.

It came after Wednesday's editions of the Daily Express and Daily Star both carried front-page apologies under the headline, "Kate and Gerry McCann: Sorry".

The Express said it accepted that a "number of articles in the newspaper have suggested that the couple caused the death of their missing daughter Madeleine and then covered it up".

It also acknowledged there was "no evidence whatsoever" to support that theory.

The paper added that Mr and Mrs McCann are "completely innocent of any involvement in their daughter's disappearance".

A similarly worded statement appeared in the Daily Star.

The Star said it was making a "wholehearted apology to Kate and Gerry McCann for stories suggesting the couple were responsible for, or may be responsible for, the death of their daughter Madeleine and for covering it up".

Further apologies are expected in the publications' sister Sunday titles at the weekend.

The McCanns will receive a public apology, read in open court

Surely if the mother of the girl that was killed in goa is to face neglect charges so should they?

Erm .. the mother of the girl that was killed in Goa shouldn't face neglect charges, and neither should the McCanns.

I can see why the Indian police want to though - blame the parent then we don't have to bother sorting out the real problems...

neither should the McCanns

Wrong.

Leaving your child alone in a Hotel room whilst you walk off down the road (No more of this 100 yards line of sight BS, it was disproven) for a nice meal is neglect. Anything could happen whilst you do that, like, I dunno, the kid could be snatched.

No I'm behaving as if a newspaper has settled out of court after printing some damaging stories without any evidence to back up their claims. Which is what has happened.

Disproven where? In the Express?

That's not neglect either.
