Ok, so hollywood films seem to make this picture up of africa being some sort of lawless world.

Now I have never been there, and Im sure it isn't that bad (well parts of it anyway), so is it fair for us to paint the picture of a place where you are likely to get shot or get aids more than you are likely to get a hot dinner?

As OcUK is the centre of the gilly (aka universe) Im sure there are people here who have been there or even live there! What is it like?

Depends where you go. I lived in South Africa for 4 and a half years. It was different to living in the UK, but not dramatically so. Lifestyle didn't really change, things we owned, used and bought didn't really change. It was just...different.

Africa is pretty big, you got to be more specific...

Well yeah, but from what we see on the news (and shock horror, they do the same) all we see is big f'off knives inserted in other people bodies.

Broadsheet mag after mag, its about corruption and nasty deeds.

Chrisp7 went to Kenya to work on a game reserve IIRC.

I think I might have helped him write his application.

So Louis Theroux had a documentry on BBC2 tonight about Joberg (Law and Disorder) and my god it seemed pretty rough. Now I know they probably cut it in such a way to make it look bad, but blimmy! Am I glad we live in a fairly tame version of disorder!

Didn't look that different to the bad parts of Philly though to be honest.

Went to Kenya in September, had its moments where it was a little dodgy but wasnt that bad. We stayed in the well populated areas, but I imagine if you went off the beat and trake you'd get into trouble.

You do very much get the sense that they see the white man as a walking wallet.

I have been to Tunisia, wasn't to dissimilar to any other tourist area.

I imagine it is different in other African countries though.
