Screwfix 2 Tonne Combi kits...be warned.

:)

Just make sure you use the jacking points and you'll be fine. Obviously park the car on a level surface and chock the wheels too. Oh, and don't jack up using the gearbox casing as a jacking point like someone on here did. :D

Will double check with manual and then check again, I'm like that.

Thinking about getting a few ramps instead I only need the car to be up for oil changes etc.

Go to Halfords and buy these:

On offer at the moment. I have both the stands and the jack. No problems here from mine. I've only used them a couple of times, but I did have my car on the stands for a good 4 hours with no problems.

I showed my friend the links to those and it turns out the 5 piece kit (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...rumb_33958-31562-38315_parentcategoryrn_38315) is also on offer, so he's gonna pick one up on his way home tomorrow. We'll probably share use of it, not that I need it at the moment, but will be handy in the future as we usually do services and general maintenance ourselves.

Gah, that's a pain. I bought my stands/jack seperately when they weren't on offer. They cost more than that reduced kit. Oh well, nm.

Looks like a good deal anyway ;)

My God @ the van.

Now it's really tempting to get that lifting kit but im really not sure how much / any use it will really get.

sounds like u loaded it funny. if i read it right, you've got one side of the car on the floor and the other side up on stands - the car would've been at a silly angle, with the stand being stressed on the side bits. maybe the stand shouldn't failed like that, but i'd also say you need to look at how you lift a car because it doesnt sound safe to me.

I got to agree here. First thing that came into my head.

Jacking points on a car to me seem to be designed to be used as a pair - front and rear, not left and right.

If I'm wanting to work under one side, I'll jack up the front & back onto stands, so the car and stands are level, giving me access under the whole car.

Well I shant have to do it again, but I shall make sure I don't just in case.

As long as you don't use a Screwfix combi kit to raise them you should be fine.

I actually lol'd :D

I have a set of axle stands that could have been used in making the titanic they are so old, but they have never let me down. Even so, I jack the car up with a hydraulic jack, then use the car jack as backup, then position an axle stand or two under the car also. Im kinda squeamish when it comes to being slowly crushed to death.

Slowly? I reckon a car falling on you would be game over pretty quickly :D

Im talking from experience when my dads ancient jack ever so slowly let the car down and I didn't notice until I had a wishbone pressing into my chest. To say I was a little panicy would be an understatement:D
