Good areas to house share in London for a young professional

Basically I'm looking for a house share in London, but I really don't know where to start... I've been working in West London for a few months now and I'm sick of the 2+ hours commute, so I want to get somewhere closer and get out of the parents house.

Ideally it would be close to work (not too close!), cheap, have good transport links, have nice pubs and clubs within a good distance and be in a good area (i.e. I'm not going to get stabbed when I'm heading back to my house! :p).

I know that is probably a lot to ask, but I don't really know how far my budget will go, so I want to get the best for my money. I think I'll be ok with rent at about a maximum of £600 pcm (lower would be better though!). However, this might vary taking in to account transport costs, bills and other expenses. Bear in mind I'm looking for a house share as opposed to a place of my own as it's cheaper, I know hardly anyone in London and I figure it would be more fun than living on my own!

I know there is a similar thread that was started a few days ago, but I thought mine is different enough to warrant a new one!

So wise people of OcUK, any recommendations?

Somewhere near Hammersmith, maybe? Should be able to find somewhere in your price range if you're sharing. Excellent transport links day and night.

As to where to find one, gumtree's probably your best bet.

The most important part of the information is missing, your location of work is..........? Im currently in the same situation except im looking around the south east london around the docklands area!

I'm finding it difficult to find accounts of what it is like to live in the areas mentioned so far and I'm still really not much wiser if I'm being honest. :p

So if it will help and seeing as a few people asked, I work in the White City district.

If anyone has any personal experiences of living in places that they think would be good for me that they would like to share, then that would be great.

There are several places to the west on the Central line (direct link to White City and also places like Holborn) that aren't far but are relatively inexpensive...Ruislip, Greenford, Ealing, Acton..

Blackheath, has everything and is a beautiful place with lots of open space, unlike most parts of London covered in council blocks and kebab shops. Also has good links straight into Victoria and Charing Cross, not too dear either.

If you work in white city I would recommend Ealing.

Not too bad a place. Plenty to do and four stops from White City.

Other way is Notthing Hill area and into London.

St Albans has a good selection of shared housing.

Not that far from the center of London.

Excellent nightlife also.

I'd go for Victoria if I was working in Brixton. £600 should get you something. In Brixton or Stockwell area you'd be able to get your own place I'd imagine.

Look for places on the Victoria line as it take for example 20min from Warren St to Brixton by tube on said line.

Avoid the White City [said like the guy in South Park] because it's *city*. Acton no. Ealing no. Greenford hell no. Northolt no. Ruislip no.

Southfields though its zone 3 and you have to put up with earls court and the district line which is pants!

The best thing about the place is mad john! The dude is a pirate! "Alright mate, alright mate!"
