looking into getting a cheap 328 as a track car toy(e36)

anyone care to offer some thoughts on the merits of my choice of toy (budget circa 2k)

If the other thread is anything to go by, the 325i (with vanos) would be a better bet, as the 328i's intake manifold is somewhat restricted.

Are you just copying my car choices :p

no because you bought a decent un

i'm buying a rough shed for tracking :)

have a picture in my head of a nice white 4 door E36 stripped/caged touring car rep albeit with a gruff 6 rather than a 4 pot ;)

I really didn't buy a "decent un" :p

It works, and it has leather, but its not exactly "decent"

It was well under your budget anyway ;)

so fox would that be 20 bhp on top of the 190 something that the 328 is putting out ?

so would i really be seeing 200 horses with just a manifold change?

and whats the difference between coupe 328 and saloon 328 (apart form 2 more doors)

parkers lists saloon as 191 bhp amd coupe as 193 any info?

Yes.

Something like that.

Thats the difference :p

Parkers is crap. They are 193bhp.

love the porsche idea, have you thought about an E30 m8? 325i would be ideal although i think in your budget you wont get one with an LSD which would be vital for getting out of the hairpin at knockers :p

My 328 puts out 197bhp according to Westec performance, with a big bore throttle body and derestricted manifold, coupled with a remap and stainless exhaust, I could push 245bhp in less than a grand, which if you know about your bimmers is old m3 power.

I would go for the coupe because it is less to worry about.

If you are going to track the car, then change the "sealed for life oil" in the diff and check to make sure that the engine was changed as the 2.8 engines suffered from nikel plated bores (refered to as Nikasil) which eventually go porous.

Also check to make sure that the Vanos has been changed or is not making any clicking sounds.

For 2k, you will be able to pick one up with a rough body but sound engine.

Old M3 power was 276bhp wasn't it?
