Forget nVidia - ATi lovers rejoice!

Three 3870's still cant even compete with the GX2  sales must be really **** for them to keep dropping the price. I smell desperation coming from ATI's pants.

Fully star out any swearing

i think they're dropping the price to get rid of the older cores so that they can fix up R700...

i thought the 3870 and the 9600GT traded blows... why is it that people reccomend the 9600GT instead of the 3870?

Good news about the cuts, crossfire might be on the cards later in the year. Until then watch this space become a battle ground for nVidia & ATI fans.

Who cares if they can or can't compete, if they perform to a satisfactory level and are cheap whats the problem? This can only be good news for current 3870 and X2 owners.

I was blown away by the performance of a single hd 3850. Crysis ran great at 1440 x 900 with all high except shadows which were medium. Smooth and quite enjoyable. I have owned a GT, GTS, and GTX prior so I know how those felt.

The strange thing was, I was using those settings in DX10. With my GT, to get the same smoothness I ran the same settings in DX9.

The crossfire performace (which I actually got them for) was abysmal though. Perhaps a result of P35 mobo, but who knows.

I would have no problems recommending the 3850's/3870's. And the cheaper they get, the better.

Now if only someone would release a reasonably priced X38 board....

darn and I just bought another powercolor 3850 512mb...got it for 80 though, I wonder if that's how much they'll be selling for here?

Because people tend to recommend whatever maker has the best top range cards as a result of the halo (not the game) effect.

Nvidia owns the top end, and as such, people with little knowledge will assume that any nvidia card is better than an ATI in any given price range.

ATi are slowly but surely pulling back the gap from Nvidia, all these cards and price cuts are making them the top choice for a lot of people

All they need to do now is become to performance king on the high end cards and then we'll be back to having a good old fashioned fight between Nvidia and ATi which is only a good thing

Excellent news for when I pick up my new X38 board - i'll be dropping a 3870 in with my X2 to boost performance even more.

Bang for buck they take the GX2 to the cleaners. Even a single X2 gives much better price/performance than it's power hungry, hot nVidia counterpart.

Plus ATI software works!

I sold my 8800 GTX because I was sick of the rubbish drivers. With my X2 I had to do was install catalyst 8.3 and that was it - all my games worked. With the GTX I was installing new drivers every week (depending on loadsofmoney's enthusiasm) and it ended up turning into a right chore.

Yup, they are about the same when you measure the scores across lots of games. But the 9600GT moves ahead when you enable AA (so i read)

How are ATI doing on power consumption these days? It's one of the reasons I switched to nvidia with my GTS and GT, but I'm not impressed with nvidia drivers. Would like to go ATI again next time round.

pretty good. the cards aren't high power drawing cards like the 2900XT was... the manual says a 550 Watt 38A on 12 v rail for Crossfire, so you ought to go well on your HX if you decide to use it...

I don't think that really matters, 3 x 3870s at the cut price = £240, 9800GX2 = £440-450, we all know the GX2 isn't worth the price premium, especially the difference being £210.
