What do people here think about the Audi A2?

I've heard quite contrasting things about this car as a used buy. Some people seem to think its a great used proposition, others seem to think its a bit dull to drive with poor ride quality. Used Car Buyer magazine were raving about it this month, but 4Car don't see to rate it (well, not the pre-2003 version).

I have to say that it does seem pretty funky (if somewhat ugly), seems to have pretty amazing fuel economy and seems very practical - apparently you can remove the rear seats to create a 'van' type load space a la Mercedes A Class - can anyone confirm?

Thoughts? Anyone got one?

Isnt this the car where you can't remove the bonnet easily and as a result the dipstick and washer filler are inside little flaps?

does look pretty ugly, but apparently is a great car, very well thought out and put together . A friend has one and absolutely loves it (and rather randomly so do the ladies i'm told :S)

Wife loved it, I hated it, she didn't get one! Bouncy, slow and not that practical, really never understood the point of the thing, get an A3 if you want a small Audi.

Way cheaper cars which are just as practical, for me people who buy these buy them for the badge, same as the 1 series and A class buyers.

Incredibily cramped when full for a MPV.

Er, its not an MPV - its a Ford Fiesta sized car with a higher roofline and removable seats, and supposedly excellent fuel economy (particularly with the FSI engine) and the aluminium spaceframe chassis / bodywork thingy.

As for 'way cheaper cars which are just as practical', perhaps you could name some which have the same footprint as the A2, comparable build quality and fuel economy? I would be interested.

Build quality is 'percieved' tbh.Meriva,Jazz etc are all hatefull cars but just as practical and frugal, even the damn Fiesta based Fusion is as 'good'.

Ive owned a Merc A class and a Meriva, and my sis had the A2, so ive had the chance to compare and contrast.

I cant understand why someone would buy cars of this ilk over a bigger MPV ala scenic/zafira, they are just as hatefull, but in a bigger way:p

I read about the problem the A2 has where the aluminium door hinges are prone to cracking. The guy that had the problem had the car from new and it was two months out of warranty when the doors started dropping. Audi found what was wrong and they refused to cover it and gave a quote of 2k to change the hinges and reinforce the panels which is part of the official repair scheme. After the magazine published it and spoke to Audi they backed down and repaired the car for nothing.

Does your family have a penchant for small and tall cars?

Anyway Merivas/Scenics and such like are for fat housewives and their hideous offsrping. You wouldn't see me dead in one.

The A2 is for a funkier crowd (even though the car is a bit ugly), and sells into a different market sector with its classy interior and spaceframe aluminium construction.

Back on topic, has anyone actually owned or driven one? Otherwise, I'm going to find one to test drive during the next week and suss it out myself.
