Wooo.. look what £27 will getcha!

Any ideas what chipset on the USB wireless? That would make it a lot easier for me than using a wireless bridge...

At the moment no, as I'm not near the computer - but I'll do my best to find out!

I think its just a generic usb wireless adapter... Unfortunately it doesnt work when plugged into the keyboard usb slot, but I did manage to get it working with the keyboard extension lead...

I'll have a goosey gander when I get in for you :)

Tom

I've got an old unbranded one and a Netgear somewhere, doubt either of them will work though :(

Might be worth a try!?

This one that the seller gave me is a conceptronic.. they have a website here.. old school. I've never even heard of them before I looked at this!

I'm pretty sure, as long as its mac os x compatible you shouldn't have any problems..

Let us know how you get on..

Alternatively - you can have this one if you want...

Wont cost a lot to put it in a jiffy envelope! :)

I have been offered an emac with 1.25ghz cpu, 256mb ram, not sure on HD. It has a apple KB/Mouse all for £80.

Not sure if i should have it but i'm very tempted, it seem a bargain?

I dunno.. I'm not really up on the prices... maybe look on theebay and check what they've sold for in the past?

Out of interest... and I apologise if this sounds spooky - but are you buying it through work? 'Cos somebody in my organisation was selling the exact same spec machine... spooky!

I'd check on ebay :)

Its not through work no matey, just somebody local. I have been wanting a mac for a while after having an iphone and thought this maybe a cheap way to see how i get on with OSX :)

Heh! Well I'd say go for it!

But check ebay. I can't seem to get it working... grr - but have a look and decide...*

I really mean buy it! :)

Geez, this brings back memories. I worked for Epson starting in 1998, and we had a fair few Macs to play with. I still remember getting the first iMac through the door, the team leader wouldn't let anyone play with it and insisted that any iMac calls were routed to him to deal with! Was fun spending hours of time finding out why certain applications wouldn't print properly, or trying to help a customer get a certain colour space to print from Adobe. Fun Fun Fun.

With regards learning on your fancy dan 12mhz 286's, jeez you guys were spoilt, we had 10 BBC Micro's running at 2mhz with 32kb of memory (if i recall correctly!). Still got a cracking Archimedes A5000 at home in the loft (along with the obligatory Speccy 48k and Atari 2600) that ran Risc OS, the only OS that i think was ever better than MAC OS.

BBC Master anyone? Vintage.. I remember the old acorns! :)

Neither of them seem to be working :( The Netgear is proclaimed by many not to and the Safecom contains an SiS chipset! Which seems even less hope. If you don't want that one, I can PayPal you something across for it if you want? :)

Showing my age here ...
I've still got a BBC B in my parents loft!

First Mac I used was a 512k at some work experience place I got sent to by school. They cost an absolute fortune as they were specced up with a 5Mb external hard drive.

Hey gumbald - it'll cost me like 90p to post it! Make a donation to a charity of your choice and we'll call it quits! :)

If you want to email me in trust - we can sort it out!

@MagicBoy - I'm the same, I remember when my dad's work got their first batch of apricots I think that we 'liberated' by which I mean, stole, a whole bunch of them... I'm sure there was a game called repton or something... awesome!

Good buy there.
I keep loking at these on 'that' auction site just to give a mac a go as never used one.
Would it be a fair and worthwhile purchase?
Couple I have seen had OS 10.3 on - not sure how 'current' that is?

Andrew

10.3 is two versions behind - launched in Oct 2003, replaced by 10.4 Tiger in April 2005. So it's still newer than XP :D

Most current Mac software requires 10.3.9, but I'd upgrade to 10.4 Tiger if the machine has a decent amount of RAM.

Evening all - jus bagged this bargain on ebay.. in perfect working order and quite exciting!

Its approaching its ninth birthday and I am currently posting from it...

Really does go to show that the longevity of macs is second to none!

Anybody else got any retro gear still working!

Tom :)

Nice one dude! I was looking at buying a 20" iMac G4, all with orginal box and packing, I watched it on eBay (forgot about it) and went for £170 :(

Thanks,
Jack

What amount of ram should I look for? Couple I seriously looked at (albeit more than the one the OP got) were
17" G4 800Mhz
256Mb or 640Mb RAM
40GB drive
CD Drive
edit:
Just noticed it says it has OS 10.3 Can this be patched to 10.3.9 or is that a seperate version?
Guess I also need a DVD to install 10.4?

I would suggest going for tiger! Most of the G3 macs, providing you can get the ram in (I think 1gb is the max) can handle it and its worthwhile getting hold of tiger... but as has been said, from what I understand 10.3.9 will run most mainstream apps!

There are some bargains to be had on 'that' site :) so its well worth keeping your eye out! (although that actually might hinder your search!)

As I always say, I'm quite new to the world of apple - but its kewl that 11 year old hardware will run modern software!

@jack_uk - keep looking! There are plenty of bargains to be had! :)
