I've read that 'B' stepping have good potential to overclock at low volts

Paid £80 for it.......

Done good or bad?

Time will tell ........lol

I have seen 2 x L629B E6600 both did 3.6 with ease with 1.4 volts. One of them was mine and really didn't like going much higer than 3.6 or the volts needed to go higher would make it run too hot for every day use, my friend had his running at 4.0 but it was only good for 3.8 24/7 heat being the issue again, both of these chips were a bit on the toasty side compared to some other E6600 I had come across but did clock well for the amount of volts needed.

L629B's were considered to be one of the best B2 Conroe steppings. I personally wouldn't have paid £80 for an E6600 but it should certainly be a good clocker.

I was going to buy one for £100 from MM as it clocked well at low volts! :)

But hey we'll see what happens!

I'll post back here when it's in and running

Was that on air..?

Both air and water, with a half decent cooler even something like a freezer pro you should get 3.6
I had mine at 450 x 8 and performance was good for gaming. Run TAT and watch the temps shoot up on air mine would hit 65 degrees, the good news is you won't find anything else that will push it that hard, not even prime/orthos or any app I have found will make it run as hot as TAT.

If I remember correctly the L729B was supposed to be the second best stepping and the best was supposed to be the L728B not that I ever got to try one of them :-(
anyhow it should be a nice little chip .... ENJOY

I've got E6600 running stable at 3.2Ghz on 1.35v, Idle temps are 28c , full load with orthos temps never go higher than 48c , ocd my EVGA 8800gts 640Mb grapics card core 702Mhz and Memory 1025Mhz and got 3DMark 06 of 12437 :D

Nice score - I currently get 10,774 with my E1240 @ 3.0ghz and my 8800GT 730/2050/1800 :)

I bought mine for £50 today. Can't get it going until I get the rest of the components.

Nice price! Is that the same stepping as mine or a different one?

Hopefully the freezer pro 7 will do my proud! If the chip runs well on low volts but is too hot for the pro 7 I'll change it!

Will report back once it's in and running :D

I'm a bit concerned that my 965P-DS3 (rev 3.3) motherboard has a FSB wall :(

If I go over 8 x 375 it boots and reboots back to default settings, if I drop the multiplier to 6 and up the FSB to 450 say it does the same?

If this is the case I'll only be able to get my E6600 to 3.6 or 3.7 at the most (nothing to be sniffed at I now)

Am I missing something or is there another way I could test and maybe get past this????

Try booting at 8 x 380/385. Sometimes there can be a "hole" in there. If its booting with a higher FSB just on a lower multi then the FSB is probably ok but for some reason not right at that point.

Hi Pea0n

Wouldn't I have proved that by trying to boot at 450 on a lower multiplier though?

Maybe the chip itself is holding my back?

I had the 27,28 and 29B stepping and the best of the bunch was the 27B. The 28B was very hot.

All could be good for 4ghz if you don't mind pushing the volts up.

Have you tried 9x400?(1.5v) I have yet to see an E6600 that couldn't do that.

Hi W3bbo

I haven't got the chip as yet should be here Tuesday, I'm worried about my current motherboard not allowing me to push the chip though :( seems to crap out at 375 with my current chip..

Maybe the E6600 will give me a lot more breathing space though?

Hey tweakinfreak,

Not sure how the rev 3.3's stacked up to the rev 1.0's but i had a rev 1 p965 ds3 which managed 470mhz fsb no sweat. Didn't try higher as i ran out of time testing and sold it on.

I'd say it's more likely the chip has the fsb wall.

The e2*** series do tend to have lower fsb walls than other c2d's. I was lucky enough to get Devious' old 2160 which could hit 400mhz (3.6ghz) but that was a rarity.

Good luck with your e6600. I just got an untested on which is currently sat @ 3.4ghz on 1.39v in windows.

Hi gt

Yeah I have heard the same, which pleases me as I want to make the most of this good stepping e6600 when it arrives this week!

Thanks guys ;)

I'll be sure to post back speeds, temps, and volts later this week :D

Few L629B i've had were good for 4Ghz on water and 3.8Ghz on air on 1.45V or less. Currently have one left at 3.6Ghz 1.35v cooled by i *think* an ultra 120 non extreme and Akasa Amber (has been a long time since i opened that PC due to access). Only problem with the stepping is that they run hot as hell for some reason.

I've searched and seen you talking about this stepping, hoping it won't be too hot :D

I currently have a AC7 Pro but would get a Tuniq or Ultra 120 if the clocks were good at low volts but the temps were high!

Should be here Wednesday all being well :D

I got a E6600, SL9ZL, L702C486 off the bay a couple of weeks ago for £67 and it's a corker. First clock was straight in at 3.6Ghz, 9x400, with 1.4v bios, 1.383v in cpu-z. Temps are 32 degrees while running Prime. Prime stable for 24 hours but i think it's got a lot more to give yet. :D
