£550 budget... can get this one on Dell refurb.

Quad core 6600 2.4Ghz
XPS 420 case
Windows Vista Home Premium
English - Vista Home Premium
Memory: Memory Dual Channel 2GB (2x1024MB) 667Mhz DDR2
Hard Disk Drive: Hard Drive 750GB
Video: SINGLE 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT card
Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme
Dell Quietkey Black Keyboard <<< Not needed
19-in-1 Media Card Reader
Mouse Dell Wheel USB 2 Button Scroll Black <<< Not needed

Would prefer professionally built and Intel / Nvidia spec.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums. Not a professionally built system, no, and it would be against the rules to link to any other systems builders other than OcUK.

You might be able to build a cheaper system yourself but I've got my doubts since the CPU is ~£140ish, Vista is £70, Ram is £20, hard drive is ~£100, graphics card is ~£130, soundcard is ~£30 which comes to about £490 and that isn't including case/PSU or motherboard yet. In some cases it does make sense to buy pre-built. :)

Many thanks... all is not lost.

I can lose the DVD writer (cos' I have a good one) and also the keyboard (cos' I have a brilliant clicky one which is certainly better than the regular dell stuff). I may also have an old XP Home license that I can re-use.

So I think I can save £104 inc vat from the suggestion above. Which brings the above spec down to £471. Need to add in a X-Fi soundcard at £50 and then I have £29 spare... to improve the component quality.

So... I think that I am really saying that I need a

Case
PSU
Graphics
RAM
CPU
HDD
Sata cable

For £550. Are the ones suggested the best ?

Can't believe I'm saying this but get that Dell if you're not overclocking.

Yes I agree. I know someone who has one of these and they are nice machines with full warranty etc

If he builds one himself, I would get a slightly better motherboard than listed above, something like the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R

Thanks for all the comments and help.

I will be using the system for hi def (1080p video playback)... web browsing (duh !) maybe a little development / compilation (used to write code!) plus a bit of video editing. Gameswise, the odd RTS game and I am looking forward to Spore. FPS make me feel queesy and I have a 360 anyways.

The Dell has a few downsides for me... USB only connectors and my beloved keyboard - can't believe that you can't find quality clicky kbds in the UK anymore ! - is a 5 pin AT which is adapted to PS/2. I don't fancy a 5 pin AT / PS2 / USB adaptor chain ! Also no overclocking and weak upgradeability (low PSU / BTX motherboard).

I used to have an MSDN Universal sub - so XP Home is licensed as an ex-subscriber (and yes, the licenses do persist after the subscription ends).

Looking for a box that will last 3-4 years and hopefully by then there will be good s/w support for Quad Cores.

Most of all, I value engineering quality - over raw speed. So a good quality case and PSU rates better for me than a few FPS.

Thanks for listening

for like £40 more you can get one with a 8800gtx

infact completely forgot about dell outlet, might consider them myself as i doubt i will ever get round to overclocker, and every penny helps.
