Currently reading through Dan Simmons' sci-fi books. The Hyperion Cantos is one of the most epic sci-fi series I have ever read. So far, I've read the first three 'main' books, and working my way through the fourth, 'The Rise of Endymion'.

Such an awesome read.

And for those wanting a smaller book to read than those above, I suggest reading some of Iain M. Banks' books.

Agree on both counts - The Cantos are the best sci-fi books ever written imo. The ending of The Rise of Endymion is stunning. Culture novels by Iain M Banks are also fantastic, albeit in a different vein.

American psycho - brett easton ellis

private dancer - stephen leather

Tales of the city series by Armistead Maupin

If you've ever wanted to start reading Fantasy, Tolkien might be a bit drawn out and wordy. His world of Middle Earth is fantastic, but I found it a bit of a drag to read in parts.

My nomination then, would be "Homeland" by R.A. Salvatore. This is book one of "The Dark Elf Trilogy". The other two are called "Exile" and "Sojourn".

The main character is Drizzt Do'Urden, a Drow Elf who doesn't fit into his cruel society and leaves his world to find friends in the overworld. This is standard dwarves orcs and goblins stuff. The fight scenes are really well written, and Drizzt in particular is a pretty cool character. It's an easy, exciting read and a good first step if you wanted to get into the genre.

Isn't that somehow based on the Forgotten Realms universe? I'm sure there was a character by that name in Baldurs Gate or something?

Well spotted! Yeah, BG, Pools of Radience, Neverwinter Nights etc are all part of the Forgotten Realms and the Drizzt stories are set in the same universe. Book 3 sees Drizzt settle in Icewind Dale.

Watership Down: Richard Adams.

Don't let the cutesy cartoon film put you off as it's a fantastic book.

Cutesy cartoon did you not watch it?! :p I agree it is a fantastic book though.

Also, Book club seems a really good idea. Would like to be a part. Reading Labrinth by Kate Mosse. its really good.

Awesome! Seems like there is a lot of interest so far! Although not seen a mod / don online yet to request the poll added!

Surely Harper Lee's, To Kill A Mockingbird?
It's about as classic as books come. I'd also be very interested in being part of a book club, but missed it first time around.

Definatly this book, my favourite of all time.
I think a book club is an excellent idea and if it means I read a book that I wouldn't normally read then good!

look , there are loads of books, as many great books as spammers....i mean members on this forum./

the BBC book list is a good start.

what say we first highlight genres first and three options per genre. then just poll each book per genre on a rotating basis.

e.g.

week
1 - fiction
2 -scifi/fantasy
3 - bbc list
4 - readers choice

that way theres a decent spread, we can work through the bbc list and theres something new for everyone.

currently reading:
into a dark realm#
wrath of a mad god
lies of locke lamoria
red seas under red skies
the social baby
the baby whisperer
The innocent Mage
The Awakened Mage

I want to get my hands on Stalingrad by Antony Beevor next time I visit the City. I hear it's a fantastic unbiased view on the failed Operation Barberossa which many historians say was the turning point of WW2. It also gives some insight on the ill fated thought the UK would join the Axis.

This seems like an excellent idea. I surf/videogame far too much so it would be great to do some reading for a change!

Well, I spy a few Dons / Mods on the board at the moment and wonder if one of them would be so kind as to create the poll for us!

Also question for the people that are interested, how long would you like to go between books? a month per book?

I was thinking of 4 weeks for each book, with the last week picking the next months book.

Post if thats too long / too short - I am a fast reader but thought a month is a good average for people.

Good idea, there's just such a great variety of books out there it would be hard to pick just one.

Also, A month would probably be a long enough time though I know myself if it's a good book a few days would see it read and a really good book wouldn't even last that long.
